For the Canadians among us

The only knitted slippers I know of (and I'm not really into knitting) are the ones made with Phentex and knitted in a checkerboard pattern in contrasting colours with pom-poms on the toe. Does that sound like what you're looking for? I know my grandma's made those ones, but I don't recall ever hearing them referred to as Candain slippers. Where did you read about them? Louisa

Now that you mention it, I know those, but don't have a pattern. I don't believe they are especially Canadian though are they ? I know they are terribly dangerous, very slippery on hardwood.

Actually, it was one of the other hockey moms. She wanted to know if I knew how to make them - her grandmother made them all pairs. She's Québécois, as were the other two who said, YA, I'd love to have more pairs of them. The slippers seem to wear exceptionally well.

Ok what's phentex?

Has anyone come up with a pattern ? I might be able to get one, a friends mother knits them but whether she uses a pattern I am not sure.

What it isn't is wool lol To be found where cheap lookalike sells, likely Wartmart. Comes in huge balls, I loathe knitting with it.

We had a couple of pairs donated to our church fall fair this past October. I'll see if I can find out who made them, and if they have the pattern available. I know some of our knitters are so good at what they do that patterns aren't necessary for them. And you're right, Sheena, they are very slippery to wear. I used to get a pair every Christmas, and my brothers and I would then "skate" across the kitchen floor!

A way to make them safe and non-slip would be to sew a piece of synthetic suede to the soles; they'd still be washable, but no longer slippery, I'd think.

JoAnn's used to sell the "non slip soles" material in their notions dept. I used to make sleepers for the kids from sweatshirt fabric when they were little, and used it on the soles. It was the white, bumpy synthetic stuff.

Yes, and you can also buy those clear little rubbery bubbles that I think just stick on.

That would work really well, too; I've never seen it in stores, but will have a look for it next time I'm in a Fabricland (we don't have JoAnn's here in southern Ontario).
