Framing Question

I have a cross stitch piece I have done on linen (my first). I have an old antique round frame that I wish to put it in. I'm not sure if I should leave it under the glass or not. The glass is 50+ years old as well and I know it would be very exensive to replace it with newer type glass. Is it worth it or better to leave it without glass or will the old glass not really make a difference if I don't hang it where it will have sunlight on it. I know experienced stitchers have strong opinions about this and I need your advice.

I wouldn't frame any embroidery without glass. Dust and other pollutants would quickly rot fibers. I have two Chinese embroideries (silk on silk organdy) hanging in my bathroom under glass. They are fine and have been there 4 years. Prior to that, they hung in my bedroom for 10 years. I have several other embroideries hanging under glass, all from the 1970's. They've never needed to be cleaned.

I would use the glass you have. The object is to keep it away from the embroidery. A mat or spacers will do that. Hang the finished embroidery in an area that doesn't get direct sunlight. It will last years.

That's my two cents. Lucky you. I have a lovely oval antique frame and no glass! One of these days I'm going to put something in that frame. Dianne
