Melissa's Dragon

Hi Melissa,

That is a lot of beautiful work you've done. One piece in particular has piqued my curiosity. Your dragon....did you embroider that right on to the sateen fabric, or did you stitch it onto a ground of Aida or the like, then cut it out and stitch the cut-out to the sateen? Either way, I love your dragon!

Hi Maureen -

Thanks for the comments! Isn't the dragon fabulous?! I was lucky enough to take him as a 2-day class at an EGA Seminar a few years ago from Lynn Payette. She was a great teacher and everyone really enjoyed the class. The best part was that no two dragons turned out the same!

Everyone brought their own background fabric (I chose the green satin) and we were each given a bag chock full of mixed fabrics and fibers - lots of black and gold nettings, lame, lace, sheers, cords, etc. There was a basic pattern so that you had the various shapes you needed to create the wing sections, etc.and the bodies were similiar on all projects but the wings were up to you - lots of layering - if I recall the fabrics were stitched right onto the background and the excess cut off afterwards. Then a lot of cording and coaching was done over the "veins" of the wings and such.

As I said it was fun -a little hard for some folks to get used to the idea that they didn't have to slavishly follow exact rules - but a little relaxing got everyone going.

I know that Lynn is a traveling teacher based in Connecticut so if you ever get the chance to take any of her classes I would recommend it. Found a mention on this EGA website where the dragon is being taught starting today!
