What was the most challenging piece people have stitched? I'm looking to start something that's going to make my brain work, and be complicated enough, and detailed enough to look drop-dead gorgeous by the time it's finished. The "off the shelf" projects that are out there today just don't seem to call to me anymore!

I always did like Dimensions designs, but somehow I've managed to miss this page. You are now talking to one HAPPY camper! What kind of stitching do you want to do? What do you find challenging? I find that people seem to mean very different things by that. For me, it seems like most stitching isn't rocket science, and I don't want it to be just plain old hard or tedious. What I most enjoy is things that look beautiful at the end and that involve a variety of colors/textures/stitches/etc. so that I am entertained throughout. As a result, I find that I tend to gravitate away from cross stitch because I find the counting tedious and and I find it somewhat monotonous to do the same stitch over and over again. Sometimes the results are beautiful, but I'm too much of a dilettante to go there very often. Probably my favorite to stitch so far (never a dull moment, even though I was doing it on a tight deadline):

If you are willing to go in completely new directions, I have found a lot of the Laura Perin designs to be interesting. For me, it's been a new direction (canvaswork) and I've been enjoying it immensely.

I don't know if you'd call them challenging, but when I really want to pay attention when I stitch I do something from Elizabeth's Designs, because she uses interesting shapes and stitches.

If it's cross-stitch projects you are looking for then check out this site. One of the members of a yahoo group I'm on is stitching "Moolight Claire de Lune" and it's gorgeous. There are many pictures on the site that are incredibly beautiful:

Pulled (Drawn) thread embroidery. Works those brain cells, takes you in a new direction entirely, beautiful results.

Off the shelf patterns/kits haven't called to me almost since I started stitching. Just not my style. So I make my own patterns.
Try that. You get the challenge of making a pattern as difficult and varied as you want and THEN you have to stitch it.
Drawn Thread's "Sanctuary." Gorgeous in the silks (and oh, how I loved fondling it--to the point that I *almost* regret framing it), and a nice selection of what the cross stitchers call "specialty stitches." If the price of the silks is an issue, find someone else who'd like to do it in the silks and split them. There are only two that took more than half a skein--the cream of the pathways and the deep green that's used everywhere, including the vining border.

I've been hemming and hawing over Garden of My heart. Old Green Gardens is in stash and is a candidate for next WIP.
