NOVA

Hi everyone.

I'm a constant lurker on the group. I know this project has been discussed before and may be considered "old news" but...

I bought it at CATS a couple of years ago. I've decided I might want to actually have a go at attempting it. However....I have little to no experienced with anything outside of cross stitch. I have not really looked at the graph in detail as to what kind(s) of stitching it involves. I just though it was stunning.

Is this something I should ever start? Will I be able to take a stab at it at all??

Thanks very much.

Well if you could point us to where we could see it, that might help.

I've looked on the net, and I can't find a link to it. At this point the chart is packed away from our recent move, so I'm kind of asking so I don't dig it out for nothing.

Absolutely. If you thought it was stunning in the chart picture, wait till you see it in person.

Why not? It's stitching on canvas. The holes are easier to see than they are on linen. It's all straight lines. Lots of colors and stitch patterns, so you won't get bored.

Genny Morrow's Nova. It's a "charm quilt" style pattern, with each block done in a different color/stitch combination. Most of the blocks use two colors of floss.

Oh, yes -- do start it and I'm certain you will finish. It's just basic stitches, in various combinations, and the directions are exceptionally clear. Look them over and you'll see how simple they really are. Well, the Fran Zenker stitch is a bit of a challenge, but you can do it!

Melissa,

You can do this. I did the Quilted Wreath years ago - it's very nice to do beacuse it is all little squares. Co-workers, upon seeing the mostly completed project asked how many I did a night. (I only had a chance to work on it at the Wednesday night stitch-in at a local shop.) I told them that on a good night, I did two squares (we talked a lot - and I was stressed!), and on a bad night I did one square twice (i.e. I had to redo it). But as you go on, it gets more familar. My mom loves this on her wall - I did it in yellow/browns, with a green background.

Go for it!

"cmg" had some very interesting things to say about Re: NOVA:

Anybody got a link to the design this thread's about? Now I'm curious. :-)

Think this one shows it, if you are referring to "Nova":

I saw this done at the Stitcher's Retreat I went to in March! It is simply gorgeous. I thought it had been done in cross stitch, but as it was framed behind glass, now I wonder. Either way, it's pretty!

Melissa,

Somethings you may find useful in threading this piece:

Nova is comprised of over 300 squares, each approiximately 12 x 12 threads. If I remember correctly, it's late and I don't want to go looking for my copy, the thread list is for over 60 different colors/threads.

It is done on 18 count canvas, which means you will be using 3-4 threads at a time in the needle. Laying your threads well reduce the number of threads you need.

Soie d'Alger comes 7 threads to the length, so each five meter skein will produce 16 to 22 18" stitching lengths. The secret is that you probably won't use any one color in more than a dozen squares and since you will be using it in conjunction with other threads will probably use less then one stitching length in each square. Look for a shop that will sell it to you by the meter and you can cutdown considerably on the amount of thread you must purchase.

Hi Christina!

Although heavily influenced by Ginny Morrow, Quilted Wreath is a Neon Flamingo design by Pat Timpinaro.

Pat's color selection tends to be more moncromatic than Ginny's.

I have had the pleasure of meeting both these ladies. I met Ginny at one the last seminar's she taught before she passed away. Pat is a friend that stops by the shop whenever she is in the neighborhood.

How did you look for it? I'm just asking because I did a quick google for "genny morrow Nova", and got back half a dozen pages of links, some of which I posted elsewhere in this thread, and am repeating here:

It's not hard to find links to it. I posted the Sundance link because it was the best full picture I could find -- there are quite a few shops that have it listed in their online catalogs.
