Oh heavens - good thoughts heading their way! I remember Maggie eating John`s sleeping tablets at around that age - luckily we found what was left of the strip and shot her to the vet`s where she was given an emetic (which produced all the evidence!) and then filled up with charcoal. She was fine the next day. It`s so easy to think you`ve left things in a safe place, but there`s almost no such thing where a young dog`s concerned!

I hope that by now Remy is improving, and that DD is also feeling better. Good vibes are going in their direction.

I remember finding my daughter, age about 2 sitting on the bottom step of the stairs with pink "stuff" around her mouth, and a bottle of St Joseph's baby aspirin in her hand. I can see that picture now; she was wearing a little pink Viyella dress my mother had made for her! Hopefully that was her last experiment with drugs..she is 47 this month.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Remy seems to at least not be getting worse after 3 nights on IV, and the vet seems cautiously optimistic that things might be turning around. The ibuprofen caused his kidneys to shut down. What he has going for him is that he is a big dog (German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees cross) and young and strong. DD might actually sleep tonight. So then, I can too.

Doesn't that just stop your heart??? My DD at a similar age managed to eat some multivitamins with iron, but, knowing she was not to have that, she hid the bottle in the front closet and would not say what she had eaten. I did find the bottle in time to take it along to emergency with me. I am surprised that most women survive motherhood with some of their hair left!! Dawne

A very wobby dog came home tonight. He is on two medications, and very tired, but lived through it all.

YAAAAAAAAYYY! I'm *so* happy to hear this. I bet DD is thrilled to have him home!

Hard to tell at this point--definitely some kidney damage, but not the stomach lining damage that might have happened. He is on a very rigid feeding and medication schedule, and definitely does not like the liquid medication, but fortunately DD is off work this week (spring break here) so she can attend to him. I visited the invalid this morning..and he still looks a bit lost, but does wag his tail.

Funny no matter how old they get, if our kids are distressed, we are distressed. And I will own up to playing some part in the way both of my kids have grown up very very attached to their animals. Some people would have discarded poor Rem as soon as the possiblity of transfusions and transplants came up; DD hung in there, and I'm proud of her for that.

Rem did vomit shortly after eating the tablets, and since he has ingested a fair number of odd things, DD thought little of it at first. A significant factor was the gelcap formulation, which gave more of the medication a chance to get into his body before he threw up.
