please pray for my little guy

Well, this morning was only supposed to be mildly stressful as I was planning on taking son to school, then daughter to preschool with plenty of time to get to the doctor's office for my thyroid biopsy. It didn't work out that way.

Karen posted that I had IMd her from the ER on Valentine's day because Thomas was shivering even though he was under 6 heated blankets and his temp had dropped and everything was out of whack. Well, here it is, 2 weeks later and he is saying that he feels like he has no strength and was shivering uncontrollably this morning with a temp of 100.6. I took him to his doc's office, praying that there wouldn't be a long line - no such luck. But he did get to see his regular doc, which was a plus. Doc couldn't honestly find anything wrong with him, but did a throat culture since Strep is running around. The quick test came back negative, but the doc said that 80% of the quick tests give false negatives, so to keep him home today and give him the antibiotics and he could go to school tomorrow. Well.....he has had 2 doses of the antibiotics, but he has very little color at all and his temp was up to

102.9....and STILL shivering uncontrollably!! I gave him children's motrin and called the answering service...lucky me, his regular doc is the one on-call tonight!!

He said to give him 2tsp instead of 1.5 every 3 hours, alternating between the motrin and tylenol, keep him home until the fever drops, and force fluids. Going to be hard since my darling boy seems to run non-stop, but that's what I'm going to do tomorrow and he will stay in his bed, if he has to, he can watch movies on the computer or portable tv/dvd player, but there is NO WAY that he is coming out of his room other than to go to the bathroom!! This really sucks because, after 10 missed

I'm really at the end of my rope here. The poor child is sickeningly thin because he has no appetite (thanks to the meds that actually work to help him focus) and when he gets sick, it just knocks him completely out of the loop. Fortunately, Rebekah doesn't show any signs of being sick...the only thing going on with her is that she decided to cut off 3 inches of a section of hair at school today!! And the teacher conference went well..teacher said she is VERY b right (duh!) and actually ahead of the other children (well, she *is* nearly a year older than all of them!!).

In addition to all of this, I made it to my doc and had 5 lovely needles shoved into my neck to check on a nodule that is on the right side of my thyroid (there are several smaller ones including one on the left side, but the right side was the largest).

Anyway, back to the original, if you could please pray for my little guy, I'm so scared for him, but I can't do anything more than what I'm doing because nobody seems to know what is going on. The best guess is that he's getting hit by all the flu variations that are going around - he can't get the flu shot because it's grown on eggs and he's severely allergic to them (wouldn't matter anyway since it only addresses one and there are 3 variations). I'm at my limit, and praying for him and the doctors and me, but every prayer seems to help.

Thanks for letting me ramble....guess it's just scared mom needing to vent

Does your little guy like milkshakes? Try making some with ensure, lots of chocolate syrup and drop in a few spoonfuls of protein powder. That way you can sneak a little nutrition into him... and the chocolate is what he will taste.

It's always so hard when our little one are ill..... try to take care of yourself too!

That thyroid biopsy is a real hoot huh? I had one in October. You lie there thinking...someone is sticking needles in my neck and WIGGLING them! Yuck. Hope all is well with you. I suppose you'll have to have it ablated. That will be interesting with two little ones. I hope your little guys gets better soon. This flu season has been the pits! In a way, I hope it's strep...that's easily treated!

Oh yeah, and NO lidacaine!! first 2 were just ehneedle, no syringe, and she wiggled them around, got nothing. SO the next 3 were aspirations...not that bad, annoying, but the very last one...OMG!! I had to cough the entire time, but just tensed everything up...as soon as she said done, I started coughing. She wants me to have another ultrasound in 3 months to check on it, and if the labs don't show anything, she said we'll just stick with the ultrasounds. If they are questionable, I get radiology and a larger needls...whoop-de-doo!! It helped me today in that I fixated on the ceiling tiles (the ones with the seemingly random dots and such) and was able to find what looked like a lion cub...so I stared at that the entire time, rolled my grandpa's wedding band in one hand and rubbed my grandma's cross in the other...nothing like multi-sensory distraction, right?

Ah well, off to give DS his next dose of fever reducer, then I'm for bed

Oh my... it seems as if you have a lot to handle. Prayers are on the way.

I have a concern I thought I should mention. Is your little guys doctor the same one that prescribed his 'meds that actually work to help him focus"?

The reason I ask is that I am on medication myself for ADD. The medication I am using is Strattera, and it works well with very few side effects. There is, however, a warning in the documentation that "In rare cases, Strattera can cause severe liver problems. Call your doctor right away if you or your child has itching, dark urine, yellow skin/eyes, upper right-side abdominal tenderness, or unexplained "flu-like" symptoms."

I don't know what meds your son is taking. If his doctor is the one who prescribed them, then most likely they know about all the side effects. If, however, you have a separate doctor to prescribe (my son went to a neurologist, I see a psychiatrist for refills) then maybe you should contact the second physician and make him aware of the shivering and fever.

I hope both you and your 'little guy' are healthy soon!
