OT: Any wasp experts?

My daughter was just invaded by a sort of wasp - nearly three inches long (including the three hairlike tails!)

Normal wasp colour but long and thin. Anyone have any ideas?

I have seen one or two, but anything with yellow stripes - particularly that big - is scary! So many of them are perfectly harmless, though. We often get plagued by hoverflies here, which panic everyone as they`re striped, but far from being dangerous, they eat greenfly.

We do seem to get more hornets now than we used to, though.

Jane just knocked the container over and it escaped - she said she last saw it flying in our direction! LOL!

Thanks, everyone.

I don't mind wasps unless they are trying to build a nest in a high traffic area - like the front door
