ot choosing the `correct` embroidery technique for .......

About 3 years ago i made a joint project with a painter, we made quite some items, than stoped, as we both where occupied with other art projects. Several of the joint items were exhibited, and got great interest . Now we both decided to resume work on it... In one of the works i Quoted a text from a 50s book, and now i want to embroider the book`s cover page as well , both as refference to where the quote came from and also as almost a Logo, that people growing up in that time will recognize ... my first decision had to be if i will make life size ,,,1 to 1 ? or enlarge it ,, [ the text itself is quite BIG]. My second and even more decision should be in which technique it should be done...... the graphics could be easily appliqued + embroidery ,,, xst, or crewel ??? thus i look at it from time to time since yesterday ??? the backgrounfd material is rather stiff [ and white] ,,,, thinking aloud ?? mirjam

Interesting thoughts. Are you and the painter collaborating, or more working separately together??? You make me think that the embroidery and the painting might or might not share some style similarities. The idea of applique is like painting with fields of flat colour--other embroidery more like "traditional" painting with much shading gradiation, combinations of paint and embroidery like action paintings. Let us know what options you decide Dawne

I intensely dislike lettering that looks too primitive, blocky, or simplistic. First you have to decide how big to make the text, then you could use stem or chain stitch or even a satin stich. I'm currently partial to padded stitches so items pop off the ground.

Alternatively, you could use your computer to print the text directly on a piece of cloth and then attach that to the ground if you wanted a realistic representation of the page. You could also abandon any idea to stitch the text and use a pen or marker to write it on your ground.

Dawne ! yes the painter and i colaborated ,. i sewed the pieces on some of which she painted or drew, while i embroidered on some. That we changed and i embroidered over or by some of drawn ones and she added some drawings to some of my embroideries ,,, in this way we made several groups. and you felt right at some of the works my embroidery , sort of added shading , etc,,, mirjam

Sory Anne i was not clear ,, the quoted Text is already embroidered in Bold letters onto the cloth , my thoughts in my note were about how to portray the front cover page onto my work as well .... The original text was partly done in xst partly in chain st,,, it has to do with the text`s meaning , I haven`t as yet printed anything on my work ,,,, thank you for your ideas. Writing with pen , wouldn`t give the Effect i want it to give .. mirjam
