I've merely skimmed the birth control, s e x, parenting thread and had to bite my tongue a time or two. I won't bore you with anecdotal references but I will say 'the best laid plans of mice and men ...' (too lazy to google for the complete quote.)

The salaries in my area, except for sometimes overpaid executives of both genders, are rather modest (aka low). The cost of daycare might be lower than in other parts of the country (no statistics to back this up just a gut feeling) but it still takes a big percentage of working parents' take home pay (see previous comment about guts).

So, the answer is

(a) don't have kids (b) park the kids with relatives (c) bite the bullet and pay whatever it costs (d) don't work (e) turn baby making into a business by selling the kids (f) none of the above (g) some of the above

LOL !! covering all options there Anne. Neither of my children where planned - I was on the pill both times (Son 20 daughter 8) I was lucky in that I was married to a supportive husband - I admit to giving the ultimatum both times 'if you're not willing to commit to helping 100% then I'm not going through with the pregnancies , especially with DD as I was by then 42. With DS , I went back to work part time when he was 18 months - it wa sa cleaning job I could take him with me, but following on I had various other part time then flexi time then full time - I wasn't happy about it but the mortgage payments won. So he went to chilminders, creche , playgroup then school - DH was in RAF and away a lot. With DD we had a long discussion and decided we could afford for me to drop work for a few years . Eventually (aged 2 1/2) she went into creche a couple of days a week mainly to be with other children then onto playgroup so I started doing a couple of hours in the local chemist.She started school aged 4 1/2 and I started part time work first on sandwich bar and then as a 'batwoman' in the Officers Mess on camp . DH finished in the RAF and his civvy job meant he was going to be around a lot more so her main care was transferred to him and I'm back to full time work. A very long winded way of saying ' you do what you have to' You can't always chose how things happen but you can try to make sure that things work out as best they can .

I'm with you...proof that one can get pregnant even while using birth control! It's a wonder to me that nowadays we think that pregnancies all happen either by total negligence or completely by design. There still exists a gray area.
