OT: Gel Nails

Having the weirdest problem with my latest gel-fill-in.

Salon I've been going to for close to a year, puts on the polish and then tops it with the gel. Looks nice, no chipping, and until recently no problems.

Last couple times, one nail has bubbled a little after I left the salon. I figure one finger, I'll cope, however.....

On Wednesday I went for fills, and they looked fine when I left the salon. 2 hrs later 8 of the 10 had bubbles (or blisters) which then deflated leaving really ugly surfaces. Thursday I go back to get them fixed. 8 new coats of polish let to dry longer this time, and 8 new top coats of gel -- also baked longer under the UV lamp this time.

By bedtime the blistering was even worse on 7 of them.

I go back today, demanding my money back, because I just don't see the point in allowing them yet another try and losing yet another lunch hour in the process.

I paid $28, plus a $5 tip. They refused to give me more then $10 back, because that is what they charge to do just gel. Now, you know that I'm gonna have to pay for new gel, plus the cost of removing the crap they left behind, plus a new tip to the girl who gets them next.

Anyway....anybody else ever heard of this sort of nonsense before?

I got gel nails only once, and didn't like them at all, so I have no tips for you on this one.

When I got my nails done for many years, I got the acrylic tips. I had a wonderful manicurist in Houston, but could never find anyone at all as competent when we moved back to Louisiana.

I bet they're using out of date stuff, or not the right mix. With the bubbling, it sounds like water or something in the gel, or they're applying too fast so that during the cure time it's outgassing, and with the polish sealing it from the top - nowhere to go - so bumpy bubbles.

Good decision.

Well, I wouldn't expect the tip back. But, they should've given it all to you. If you charged it, then you could dispute the charge. Else, take your $10 and try elsewhere. When I had the hair salon problem, she just offered me a discount - which I took and paid. Then thought about it, and stopped payment on the check - leaving them a message (weekend). On Tuesday or Wed

- the owner called wanting me to not stop payment, etc - so she could save the $25 fee - because of course she went ahead and deposited the check. I just told her sorry, but she should have said something originally when the stylist only offered me the discount. And the $25 - well, sometimes it's the cost of doing business.

I have a really good person for nails. I did stop getting the nails done a couple of years back - can't have even polish with the medic stuff. But, at least I can go for pedicures. The woman that had been doing my nails for a couple of years - the best pedicures for sure - had left the place. So, someone else was doing it - almost as good. Then, this spring while my friend Shoma & I were in the parking lot outside the local coffee place - we hear a little heavily accented voice yelling at me. Look up, and there is Tina - young Vietnamese woman - running across the lot. She'd moved now to the new nail place out here (in the plaza conveniently next to the ice rink

5 mi from new house). They're next to the coffee place. So, I was glad to find her - and the place is very clean, and they give us soda or whatever to drink. When I told DH, he said "did she ask ?" Because they've done a pedi for him several times - and whenever he's not with me (most of the time) there is a chorus of "where your hubband?"

So, if you want DH to drop you up here some time, I'd take you to my place (only about a mile from where Caryn's DH works).

Good luck, ellice

Many moons ago I was a nail tech. Go to any store pick up a bottle of acetone and soak them off yourself. Sounds like either the polish was old/contaminated or the machine is going bad. Don't know the specifics because they very brand to brand. Call the shop you will be going to and ask what brands they use then check on the internet for the instructions. If they don't follow them ask why, they are there for a reason. I have had people who started new meds or had had a high fever etc have trouble with nails coming off or reacting badly. Make sure your hands have not been in water or any other liquid for very long for a couple of hours before you have nails done also ifd your hands are very cold it will effect some types of nails. Good luck with it :)
