The Silver Bough by Lisa Tuttle. Just go read it. It's short and a fast read, but so wonderful!

I hate to give away too much - a small town on the Scottish coast, an America girl looking for answers about her grandmother, two other women who have moved to town, a library and apples. Oh and a little magic.....
