The news film of the First Nations people who are over in France and Belgium at the moment has been excellent. For those outside of Canada, a group of Indian, Inuit and Metis people have gone over to perform ceremonies to "call home" the spirits of the soldiers killed in Europe. An inukshuk has been placed on a Normandy beach pointing back to Canada. First Nations veterans have been part of the group, along with dancers and singers. Dawne

You are missing the point.

I saw that, it was very moving.

Who are the Metis? That's a new name for me. Dianne

Metis are the descendents of the early traders and the Indian peoples with whom they traded. Their "homeland" is largely Western Canada. They have a unique culture, their own language (Michief), and are renowned for their mastery of the fiddle and their national dance, the Red River Jig (the love of the fiddle is not surprising, considering that most are either Scots or French somewhere back in their ancestry) They have had a long hard history, excluded from those limited rights and protections afforded the Indians, but facing prejudice from those who saw them only as "half-breeds."
