OK if we take 'just a mother' and 'merely a mother' that's condescending, it's a big job being a mother. While I am always on the side of the working mother, I have never decried the job of the woman who stays home to mother children. That's just as important.

I don't think it is necessarily condescending. I was a working mother and would have given my right arm to have been "just a mother!"

It's all in the context. Dianne

She will likely have a security man but really, who is going to kidnap her? Her mother is going to be a representative, has zero political influence or power, even the most stupid person can see that's a no brainer.

Exactly. She has been a working mother and things are just about to get a damn sight easier.

Sheena,

Many people, outside Canada, do not realise that this lady is just a figurehead; they think she will be like a US President ( who has less REAL power than the press give him).

Au contraire, she will be a smiling and gracious figure, doing the things Her Majesty would do, but that is it! She has no power, but her job is to be gracious and charming. I am sure she wil do a wonderful job.

i have printed out a couple of pages of your travelogue for future use!!

I think you`re right, Mirjam, given the state of mind of the said terrorists. If they`re going to attack ordinary people totally randomly (Muslims amongst them) - if they can get a more prominent target they`re going to take that opportunity if and when it presents itself.

Pat P

That being the case Mirjam, the current GG should have been wiped out by now! She has been all over the place and would have been an easy target but she is still alive to tell the tale.

She usually has a ceremonial type officer walking beside her, but she is not whisked from place to place furtively. She stands right out in the open, proudly.

You two remind me of terrorists under every bed ! I don't think either of you have a clue about how life is in Canada!

You have both been reading too much Jim Cripwell about women sneaking around wearing hajibs and plotting terrorist activities.

Don`t be daft, Sheena, it can happen anywhere in the world. You`ve been lucky so far but it`s "better safe than sorry". Maybe your Innuits and Native Americans/Canadians might one day decide that enough is enough - and I wouldn`t blame them! ;-)) If you have Muslims, there`s ALWAYS the possibility that there are extremists amongst them.

Pat P

Canada has had its terrorist experience--10 years ago, when a bomb was placed on an Air India flight leaving this country, blowing it up off the coast of Ireland. Innocent Canadian citizens were killed because a quarrel from another country (India, over Sikh independence) was brought over here by a few militant extremists. The rest of the world seems to have taken little notice of this terrorist activity in North America, and our own government seems to have mishandled a long and costly legal investigation, since those charged after so many years were acquitted. However, Canadians of Indian descent continue to live and work productively in this country. Dawne

Thanks for that info, Dawne - I KNEW there had been something, but couldn`t remember what or when.

Pat P.
