OT: Roadside Memorials.

the clock of my computer seems to be 17 minutes ahead of time, i will corect it later . But why do you write that ........

I always write at the top of the letters ,,,,, But we in general here are 2 hours before UK time ....>>>

I wrote it because when your clock is 17 minutes ahead of real time in Israel, for whatever reason in the workings of usenet postings, it causes your posts to remain at the top of all the other posts.

Some people who wish to advertise things in local marketplace groups, deliberately set their computers ahead so that their post will always be on top, that way they think they have a better chance of someone responding to their ad.

I can't explain it very well. Trying again. I read all the posts I want to, I go away and do something else, when I come back to my computer and bring up rctn and click for new posts to appear, they do but always below posts already made and read by Mirjam. Your post stays at the top because my reader is set to put latest posts at the top, so given your clock is ahead of time, it thinks your posts are the latest, which they are according to the computer clocks.

Sorry can't explain it any better than that, maybe someone else can.

Monuments, yes, but in the right place!

Personally I just want to be cremated and have my ashes scattered in our forest which has been replanted after OUR hurricane. It`s growing up nicely, but every little helps! And since DH wants to go wherever I go, we both want the same.

I think that that very corny old poem still has it all, as far as I am concerned, at any rate.

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. (Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die! Mary Frye (1932)

I refuse to go to funerals where someone is going to read that! It is corny in the extreme!

I know it is, but still apt.

And what's so wrong with having a pink flamingo on the shelf?

Tegan (who has a whole flock of the darned things...)

I couldn't escape it at Vick's memorial, Sheena! *I* wanted the poem from Auden (read in Four Weddings and a Funeral), but his brothers and sister outvoted me. At least *I* won the music "battle". I know it disturbed some of the older attendees, but playing Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" just seemed more right than anything by Enya!

I'm sorry you had to sit through that - everything should have been to your choosing. What happens to people sometimes when someone dies and they overrule the one who was closest ?

There is a fellow Girl Scout in town that is posted outside her tent at night!

Flamingos aren't tacky - they are the coolest birds around - ready to go to a prom any time. Just ask my daughter LOL!

One of these impromptu roadside memorials appeared in Akron this week after a child was killed by a hit-and-run driver in a school zone crosswalk. Shortly after its creation the memorial caught on fire because many people left stuffed animals and others set lighted candles behind them. Rubbernecking drivers are obviously not the only danger caused by these memorials.

Here in the LA basin, as far as I'm concerned, they simply landmark the spot where someone did something really stupid. Usually a newly licensed teenager in a vehicle he's not qualified to drive, with a bunch of not-belted-in friends in the SUV with him. I've become quite cynical about these "memorials."

C'mon, Lucille! If you were *really* tacky, that flamingo would be on the lawn!

Not me--I'm a transplanted Noo Yawka, not a Southern Cracker. Lucille

A woman I know on another message board lived on one of the islands of South Carolina until she recently moved back to NY after her husband passed. The HOA wouldn't allow any lawn ornamentation at all, so she collected flamingos that she could display in places visible through the front windows.

Love it Lucille ... my Father was a 'decorator' of sorts - our house looked like a circus at Christmas with the lights and decorations inside and out - and in the summer we had more flowers than the local nursery ... and amongst those beautiful flowers was this gawd-awful plastic pink flamingo - he just could not let go of that stupid thing - it had more masking tape and twine on it to tie it together than you could ever imagine. All five of us 'kids' remember it to this day - and I was only 4 or 5 when he started with this thing. The flamingo crossed that Rainbow Bridge in a hurry when he died 25 years ago.
