OT: Subtitles.

Just watched the Trooping of the Colour. John, being deaf, had the subtitles on, and we were highly amused to see the subtitles referring to the "Green Deers`" Slow March (Grenadiers of course!) Still, it conjured up an entertaining picture.

Subtitles don`t half spoil your concentration - they usually put in some real howlers.

They also have other uses. While visiting my parents in Portugal, we watched untold movies in the evening. English movies, with Portuguese subtitles. In a few days, I was 'getting' Portuguese (not understanding it word for word, but understanding the gist of the conversation).

I went there knowing one Portuguese word, retrosaria (needlework store). LOL

LOL - we used to have a "TV Guardian" for the kids, to bleep out words we didn't want them to hear at a young age. Whenever cartoons were on, and a rooster crowed "c*ck-a-doodle-doo", it would mute it and substitute "jerk-a-doodle-doo"! LOL - the kids wanted to know what was wrong with the original! Kim

You don't know how much I needed this laugh this morning. Dawne

That is *too* funny, Kim!!! So, how did you explain it to them? ;)

These reminded my of something my DD brought home the other day. She found an ad for horses for sale in some ag newspaper. In the ad it had "mayors and guildings" for sale (for non-horse people, that's supposed to be "mares and geldings" [i.e. castrated males]). I told her she should call and ask which town's mayor is for sale---I bet that mayor would be surprised! LOL!

Joan

She should also ask how much the Mayoral chain of office weighed!

That's what I told her! I should try and get it and send it to them.

Joan

LOL - I just kind of avoided the issue. I'm chicken that way. We have had the "talk", but I don't see any point in introducing them to the slang.

I love the "mayors and guildings". One of the stores I've been in lately has a sign " you brake it, you buy it". (cute if in a car shop, but this is not!) Drives me nuts! LOL Kim

Oh dear - my favourite China shop has a sign like that (or rather "breakages must be paid for") - I`m almost scared to breathe in there as it is in such an old building that the upstairs floors shake as you walk across them! Last time I went in (looking for little pots/sugar bowls with lids, as usual) I dropped one - luckily it bounced!

Mind you, accidents do happen, and I`d think that that is a risk you`d take, if you have such a shop. I doubt that it would be enforceable.

Pat P

Yeah, they'll pick it up fast enough on their own! sigh.

Like the sign in the local grocery store that indicated where the "ethic" foods are! LOL! I should look and see if they ever changed it...that was a year or two ago.

Joan

I recently pointed out to the fifth grade "team" that "half dome" is a proper noun - a place name to be specific and had to pull out a map of Yosemite to prove it.

One that aggravated me was a sign, made up by the county; they confused residents and residence !! Actually, one sees a lot of incorrect spellings on businesses and on vehicles. I would be ticked off if I paid for a sign, and it was mis-spelt! ( or is it mis-spelled??)

Gillian

Blue was a retail manager for some time. His boss ordered signs saying "Welcome to Business". Weeks went by, and his boss after several digs about the lack of signage at his store finally said "All the other stores are displaying the sign. You are the last one to put it up". Blue responded with, maybe the other stores got the correct signage, but the people in my town know it's spelt WeLCome, not WeCLome.

All the signs in the other stores came back down that day. :-)

To this day, I can walk in the store and somebody there will say "Weclome" just to hear me laugh and know there is someone else who understands.
