I am going into serious Extra Innings withdrawal since I can't get my package over cable any more. Has anyone made the switch to the dish? Is it complicated to have done? Can I keep my comcast internet but dump the cable tv part? Is Best Buy OK to go through or should I deal with Direct TV directly (hah)? I swear it was easier to decide to get married than to make this decision.

I switched from cable to satellite many years ago, and it was easy. I want my TV at home and at the cottage; so two dishes, one box, and one monthly payment. However, that was the days before all the bells and whistles you are talking about. My impression is that if you have a telephone link for the up load, the satellits will do everything cable does for the download. But I have never looked in to this aspect, so I dont really know.
I probably am not much help. However, cable is not available in our sub-division in Florida. Therefore we all go with satellite TV. Some with Direct and some with Dish. We have had Direct TV for ten years, and when we go away in the RV in the summer, we transfer the box-thingy from the house to the RV. In order to get National networks, we have to do some fancy schmancy stuff with Direct, showing we own the RV etc.
I pay the bill directly to Direct; in fact I no longer get a regular bill, I do it all online.
Our Internet is with Verizon, as are all the other communications; cell-phones, long distance, local phone etc. I just pay a whopping bill online each month!

Are you sure you can't get Extra Innings on cable? I believe the industry reached an agreement with MLB on Wednesday - the same day we had our satellite dish installed because we wanted baseball. It was easy getting DirecTV installed.
On the flip side of this equation, things having to do with internet access may not be quite so simple. We just got an automatic phone message from Verizon yesterday saying DSL is not available at our location. (this doesn't seem right to me. Will be calling on this.) For the moment our computer is still connected to cable broadband - but the price is ridiculously high.

The extra innings listings suddenly reappeared on my tv as of this morning. So in 20 minutes I'll be able to find out if I really don't have to swtich, which would make me very happy. I SO hope it's no a cruel hoax.

I have DirectTV with Comcast cable modem. It works fine, and I would never go back to the cable channels again. It's very easy, and no hassel at all to set up. I'd switch from the cable modem if you have verizon FIOS in your area. As for going through someone ofther than direcTV I have no idea, I always find it easier to cut out the middle man.

Oh joy, oh rapture, I don't have to switch! My beloved Extra Innings has reappeared on Comcast. I'm calling today to get signed up. We have the Center Ice package too.

I'm with you on that one! I've had DirecTV since 1996 and would never go back to cable!
While we were displaced after the fire we had to go with Comcast, because we couldn't install the dish on the front of the townhouse (southfacing location is required). The picture was worse, the customer service was a mess and it had a LOT less channels.
Needless to say, the new dish was installed on the new roof before we even moved back into the house!

LOL - but you can get the "cricket" channel as an extra. We have friends that get it - I personally think they're insane, but.... They do sit around and watch test matches at all hours of the day and night. The dad & 14 yr old son even went to Trinidad&Tobago for the "world cup" test matches a couple of weekends back. My friend had the house empty for 3 days while her "boys" had a blast going to cricket.

I'll probably be condemned as an heretic but I agree whole-heartedly with the person who described cricket as "Baseball played by people on very strong doses of industrial strength tranquilisers". Whenever there is a Test Match (there seem to be an awful lot of them and they go on for days on end) the BBC devotes its long wave transmission of Radio 4 to a ball-by-ball commentary. It makes watching paint dry quite an attractive proposition.
