OT-Comcast cancelling newsgroups

I was just notified that Comcast is canceling newsgroups as of next month. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive provider that gives great service.

Damn them!

news.individual.net charges in Euros, so the exact price depends on the exchange rate that day, but it runs about $20 a year.

If you need a newsreader, Netscape 7.2 is free.

You already gave me that one and it works beautifully. I suppose I'll stick with them, at least for a while.

I wouldn't mind paying a small fee, but giganews, the company that provides the Usenet for Comcrap isn't cheap enough for me.

You may find motzarella carries more groups than other paid ones. Free is good lol

I just may go that way too, but first I'll look for something even cheaper.

Well--they could pay me, couldn't they???? lol

What I meant to say is that I'm a little nervous about anything free. I always think there's going to be some sort of problem that I could never think of in advance.

I guess my cynicism is showing. see me blush

news.individual.net runs about $14/year. And is easy to renew and get connected. I've been using it about forever. German university started charging about 3 years ago. I didn't mind. It's just a about a dollar a month.

I have to second Motzarella! Not only is it free to read, but free to post, too. Many "free" news servers have an upcharge to include posting access. It's easy to sign up, and I use Outlook Express as my newsreader for it. Beats going through Google groups, and I refuse to pay for Usenet service in addition to my internet service.

It's runs flawlessly. It is free now, so was news.individual originally, with time maybe motzarella will start to charge. I actually prefer it to news.individual so am happy it stayed free.

Well if you insist on paying for the identical thing...

I already have an account with Motzarella as a backup and I guess I'll just stick with them, at least for now.

Does anyone think I'll get a reduction in my monthly bill now that they don't support newsgroups anymore!!! ROTFLMAO ;-))))

For an old gal, Lucille is fast -- she saw info about closure way before I did. I'm using motzarella to post ... how does it look?

Perfect! You can thank Sheena for Motzarella. She gave it to me when Comcrap started to give me grief a few months ago.

Miz Borgia's bark is occassionally worse than her byte. She can be a real pussycat at times

Thanks, Sheena. I've configured all my clients -- I've got 2 backups as hedge against my preferred news reader getting corrupted again.

I know about google, but are there other freebies around?

Unlike google which is a web/browser based interface to newsgroups, a 'newsgroup client' is the application used to connect to a news server and read messages, much nicer than web based apps, imnsho. Older versions of Windows had Outlook Express. I've downloaded sea monkey and thunderbird as backups to out- dated and fragile Gravity.
