OT -Trying to get rid of fabric

Can anyone tell me what organization would like to get fabrics of various types free of charge? My sister, who passed away this past August, had loads of it as she was a very talented lady who could do just about anything. However, her husband is now trying to unload fabric - mostly for sewing clothes I would think. It would be nice to have it go to a source that could do something very useful with it. He lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, by the way.

Sometimes schools take it, or shelters, and retirement/or convalescent homes. Or a community center. We do donations from the shop to the women's shelter, and the nursing home. You might also consider a center that teaches skilles to those with disabilities, or a local sewing or quilting guild. There are a lot of charity activities going on. Just some ideas.

Well, there is a woman -- Jill Pochick of Critter Comforts (

Unfortunately, she's in Walled Lake, MI and postage to ship it to her would likely be too costly. If you think yore BIL would be interested in sending it to her anyway, let me know and I will e-mail her address. Check his local soup kitchen for " lunch bags for the needy" program. I know the local Catholic church does it and I think maybe the Methodists as well.

Ask around -- for a while, I was getting bags and boxes of secondhand yarn that I was turning into baby blankets for the battered women's shelter. Money was really tight, so the only way I could do it was to beg for leftover yarn. (And I got the opportunity to play with all sorts of interesting fibers! We had some elegant babies, in fuzzy/sparkly blankies courtesy of one "fashion knitter".)

You may find someone who has time, but no money, and is willing to use their time and your fabric to make clothes for the needy. I know I've read about someone locally who does it, but as Tia said, postage to the US would be prohibitive. Better you should call your local newspaper/TV and see if they know of anyone doing it there.

This link doesn't work - do you have an email or other address for her? My GS troop is looking at doing their big Junior project (Bronze Award) and several want to do something for animals - this would fit in perfectly! You can post here or email me off list.

Thanks!

All great suggestions ladies ... I'll let you know just how it's all dispersed. But I don't think there will be very much shipping involved

- there's just too much fabric. I wish we could - especially the Critter Comforts - but not feasible. Thanks for all your great suggestions.

I've seen lots of fabric in our local Hospice Thrift Shop and apparently it's been a good seller because most of it was gone in a few days. I know here they will give you a receipt for any donation and you can then take it off your income tax.

The other place that probably would be delighted to accept such a donation here is an organization called Safe Space. They relocate abused women and children and they're always happy to accept anything that can be used for clothing or home furnishings. Is there some sort of equivalent organization in Nova Scotia? They even took my old cell phone and assured me they would set it so the women could only use it to call 911 in case of an emergency. \ Lucille
