There are some who do have a method to their madness (combining family names to make a pen name) and then there are those who just pick a name they like the sound of.
One thing that I've heard from authors at book signings is to consider the length of the name. You'd rather sign JD Robb a few hundred times than Katherine Louisa Malinkowski. :)

My friend's maiden name was Breitsprecher, she married a man name Reed. I am not convinced that having 9 fewer letters in her last name wasn't part of his appeal!
Just kidding, they'll be married 18 yrs this summer, and are very happy.
