OT: USA Political Question

I'm a bit lazy with no time to hoggle-google looking for an answer to something I've wondered about for weeks, so could someone here please help me out?Presidential candidates pick their running mates who may become Vice-President or President if the President becomes incapacitated. The running mates are picked not elected at the party level. My question is, do the running mates ride along on the coat tails of the Presidential candidates or are they elected by the citizens? If the running mates are elected by the citizens, is it possible this time around to have a Democratic President and (Lord forbid) a Republican Vice-President?My memory is a bit weak but I don't think LBJ was actually elected as Vice-President and if he was be darned if I can remember who he would have defeated in order to get the position. Agnue??My prediction - If the media projects Obama as the winner within 1-1/2 hours of poles closing Obama will actually win. If the media projection/confirmation takes longer - say - over two hours Obama will lose due to massive ballot manipulation.
