OT: Voluntary Purina Pet Food Recall

Hi Guys, I am on the Purina mailing list and I received an e-mail saying that Purina is voluntarily recalling Alpo Alpo canned dog food. Here is the entire letter (well, without the color letterhead) .........

ALPO® BRAND PRIME CUTS IN GRAVY CANNED DOG FOOD VOLUNTARY NATIONWIDE RECALL

No Dry Purina Products Involved

March 31, 2007

On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.

Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-,

12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall ? including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

At Purina, nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of the pets whose nutrition has been entrusted to us by their owners, and we deeply regret this unfortunate situation. We will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Please see our March 30 press release for more information and click here for an updated list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you have more questions or concerns, please contact our Office of Consumer Affairs at

Back to MOI =- be sure to remember that the recall does NOT include ANY dry pet for or any pet food other than the ALPO brand name. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I got a message from Hills Science Diet reporting that they are recalling one kind of dry cat food. I didn't pay much attention because I don't use cat food at all, but for those who might feed Science Diet Dry Cat food I think you definitely should check their website for more information.

Yes, it's been on the news here, and I use Hills cat food so I checked. The M/D type is apparently the only one that uses wheat gluten and so that is what is being recalled.

You know what makes me mad ? All this because they could buy wheat cheaper in China ! What did they expect ??? It's grown in a country that has little to no laws about pollution, adding fertilisers etc. Hey CEOs - it's cheaper because it's not fit for human, or pet consumption !!!

That's true. In fact it was probably purchased for pet food because it was unfit for human consumption. In order to get rid of the rats, they sprayed. And then it wasn't cleaned any further. Wheat for human consumption is allowed a certain proportion of rat shit as content as I recollect but this probably went over the limit so it was sold for consumption by animals.

As my friend the importer who has cats said, if you're shipped a container all the way across the world, it's too expensive send it back. So sometimes you'll receive a container of crap, basically. One of the reasons he doesn't buy pots. He's received containers where every single piece was broken, and suspects it was broken when it was put in the container. The stuff you bought is being sold to someone else, either within the country or willing to to pay a higher price.

So it's sold off as the cheapest of the cheap wheat over here. I wonder that it hasn't shown up as cattle feed, but I suppose small animals show the effects more. Which makes me wonder whether there is a cumulative effect in larger animals that eventually shows up on our dinner tables, but that would require a bit more research and I'm more interested in my tea this morning. Hopefully there are laws which protect the animals destined for the table and what they are fed, at least since Mad Cow revealed the stupid things they were doing with ruminants feeding them flesh !

I believe I mentioned here that my vet points out the advent of pets incurring vet fees quite neatly co-incides with the start of the pet food industry. I think it is something like formula feeding for babies, at one stage the milk companies convinced mothers it was better and got a foot in the door; so with the pet food industry they pushed the idea that table scraps were less than gourmet food for your cat/dog. I remember them doing it and now their foot is in the door too.

Well, since Purina doesn't make Hill's dry pet food, the recall by Purina still doesn't include any other of their pet food products =8-) (R&D&H). No, but as most folks are assuming it's not dry food at all could come as a bit of a shock. I was more shocked that it was a prescription formula.
