OT: What is, Who's Who?

One of the Jeopardy questions was which show features some kook who runs around in a Tardis.

Thanks to you, I knew the answer. Where I had my problem was not knowing whether it should be "What is Dr. Who?" or "Who is Dr. Who?" (Or, my personal favorite, since the one series shown here was that mouth-breather who drove me batty, "WHY is Dr. Who?")

Argh! You've found my Jeopardy pet peeve. "Who is" would be appropriate for any person (real or fictional). Ever notice how rarely "Where is" and "When is" are used even though those responses would be completely correct for certain categories and items?

As for the item you menti> One of the Jeopardy questions was which show features some kook who runs

Brenda,

You are clearly a creature of taste and refinement!

Dr Who, like many shows not dumbed down for the mainstream viewers (the sort that require their TV shows to have the intelligence and wit of your average pet rock) is an acquired taste. Too many people can't see past the lowbudget sets and costumes to appreciate the intelligence of the writing.

I got hooked on the show back in the 70's, thanks to my brother who found it first. I am still slowly collecting it on DVD!

And now that it's too warm to wear the last one you knitted, my father has it draped over the footboard of his bed... I'd say it was a pretty big hit!

Oh, Brenda, don't even tempt me... I've been trying to decide on something for my own windows. I've still got the curtains from the landlord in the living room, a nice neutral cream, but not quite working with the oak and black decor that's been developing. I could so very easily spice it all up with a scarf or two!!!

I dunno, I would say it depends on the actual question. Was it asking for the show or the name of the character? Your phrasing (which show features...) suggests that Jeopardy was looking for the name of the show, in which case I would think it should be "What is Dr Who?"

Wish I could look for some jelly babies but they're pretty rare here in Northern California, alas! Well, unless I got extremely lucky and came across a good British import store. Heck, maybe they'd have some lemon sherbets too. I was in England/Scotland a few years ago and picked some up at Marks and Spencer and became a hopeless addict. Soooo much better than American lemon drops.

I do however have a Dr Who scarf! It's the very first thing I ever knitted, the reason, in fact, that I learned to knit in the first place. A friend of mine in college went to England and said he'd bring me back enough wool for two scarves (I had the pattern from a magazine) if I'd knit a scarf for him. Now who could resist that kind of offer?? :) My best friend's mom was a knitter and taught me how to knit so I could make the scarves.

It is a good first project! All garter stitch, so just a matter of not dropping stitches and changing colors as needed.

I've knit 4 or 5 now...lost track! Sold the last one on ebay (to Jenn for her dad) but have also sold them thru a gaming shop on consignment. Tended to knit in class in college anyway, so was a fun way to get some extra cash!

I knit one last weekend--just garter stitch since it was a very fuzzy novelty yarn with bits of sheer ribbon tied into it. It is a good way to get the feel for an usual yarn before committing yourself to knitting something bigger with it and finding out it is awful to work with. Dawne

Yeah, a garter stitch scarf is a great way to learn the feel of a new yarn.

My Dr Who scarves have been 12 or more feet long....more than a weekend's worth of knitting!

You'll have to get your hands on the Dr. Who DVD collection and knit along--i have a hold on it at my library. Actually, DD's first knitting was her own version of the Who scarf, which is more than twelve feet long, but not in authentic colours. Hers is tangerine, yellow, acqua, light purple and grass green. I still wear it on very windy winter days--it wraps around my neck several times and still hangs down to my knees on each side. Dawne
