OT - Words

You'll get through it, my sympathies as one who was married to a British naval type - sometimes away for nearly two years at a stretch.

There you go again. I don't see Trish spreading hateful words, she's simply disagreeing with you, but anyone who disagrees with you is hateful or unkind.

There is, by the way, no such thing as a "pure" historical fact.

ad a child named Sinbad.

Sweetie, that was so damned long ago, I worked there as a student med=20 Tech from 1954 until 1957. I suspect the local paper, or maybe local=20 gossip, was responsible for that!!

Now this is why I like living in a Navy town. It's really helping me keep my perspective. Two YEARS?! Madame, you have my respect and admiration.

Yes in a way it does help to be in a navy town. I assume he is with the red line ? My son did a spell in the Hudson up in the arctic for about six months. He absolutely loved it, his wife didn't lol It's tough with little kids, mental starvation.

I hope you have family around to help out ? Yell to me if you needed help anytime.

Actually, he's a physicist doing climate research. We're originally from Toronto, where our families still are, but my dad was able to take some holiday time and come out for a couple of weeks. He went home Sunday, and DS really misses him, so the last couple of days have felt a bit long. This job is just easier with two sets of hands! And thank you, Sheena, I will add you to the list of emergency contacts in case everything falls apart again. I've discovered that list can never be too long. DD was quite sick for a week at the beginning of the month, and that had its moments. Thank goodness for good friends and neighbours. What would we do without them?

No worse than the series "The Tudors". There they have the wrong sister of Henry VIII marrying the wrong crowned head of Europe - and for no discernible reason. It doesn't affect the plot line, they just did it wrong!

Well, Trish m'dear, I don't know how it is in Strilia, but here in Canada one has no expectations whatsoever about the performance of most employees at large retail stores.

Thanks, Elizabeth! We don't have many Gaelic/Celtic people around here so I'm never sure of the pronunciation.

I'll admit that I'm guessing, but the guess is based on seeing lots of Gaelic names lately.

Didn't you know that ? That's why I was ragging on her about having to wait to be a GOW, she's barely out of the egg yet.

I noticed the issues with 'The Tudors" as well, and then I read an article in which the director was interviewed. Basically, they consolidated Henry's two sisters into one character simply to reduce the numbers of characters they had to deal with, and then married her to the old king as a dramatic device. As I recall, the one sister did marry a fairly elderly monarch, though I don't recall her killing him. Of course, the fact that there's now no way to explain how Mary Queen of Scots is related to the Tudors may prove problematic, but I don't know how many seasons they're counting on, so it may not be an issue. I think the thing people need to remember is that historical dramas are meant to give the viewer the sense and flavour of a period or a personality and showcase some main points. The best ones make you want to go find out more about the story. 'Troy' was a case of good actors being wasted, I thought, but it was not nearly as egregious as 'Pearl Harbour'. But I don't have time to write the book required to address that travesty, I have to go make dinner.

Well, another good one was 'Kingdom of Heaven', which I think was made purely as a vehicle for the wooden Mr Orlando Bloom (no denying he's majorly picturesue, but that's all). They had Balian of Ibelin in existed about three or four generations *before* he was born! DD howled at this one too, because for some inexplicable reason, she's got the hots for Baldwin IV and thinks he's the most under-appreciated king in history. Odd child, but I do support her phume at the historical inaccuracies. After all, the real story is usually just as exciting as the made-up one!

In DH's Scout troop, there's a kid who's called Shavonne. Not Siobhan, Shavoane.

At DD's school, there's a Shaymus and a Cosmo and a Shazmay and a Dakkotta (that's pronounced 'Dakota', but spelled 'Dakkotta').

I had never seen this name until a few years ago and then shortly after that it popped up here, so I asked how it is pronounced. Prior to that I would pronounce it: sigh ob (long o) hawn. I *never* would have guessed in a million years its correct pronunciation! LOL

EEEeuuuuuwwwwww!!!!
