I had the TI30 also. But, fortunately DF got over the cost and slur upon his sliderule! I couldn't swing the HP I really wanted. But, like Elizabeth, still have some of those college calculators.
For stats - so much better than having to write code to do my OR homework (like advanced stats with word problems). Then it would be sitting and waiting for print-outs.

I think my first calculator was a TI50 Programmer. And I didn't get it till I started working. Not fancy and not many functions but it did convert hex and octal to decimal which was wonderful when try to debug programs and reading dumps from both Univac (octal) and IBM (hex) computers. I remember how excited the local Univac rep was when he first showed them to my officemate and me. I used that calculator for many years until it finally died.

Oh wow! I had a T130 as well! First, I shelled out $100 of my hard-earned money to get a basic four-operations calculator with one memory (the same kind you can get for $2 today). Then, when the T130 was required for Biomaths and Stats, it cost (from memory) around $50. It was a *workhorse*! I still have it and it still works, although it's been a zillion years since I did a t-test or a chi-squared... ;-D
I understand that certain calculators are allowed for testing vs class work, but since this "new" calculator could have been used for his earlier classes, I'd rather buy it once. Like all college prep math classes use TI xxx rather than change midstream.

I will say some of DS's problems are more involved since, with the calculator, there are none of those messy interpolations...

Sorry for seeming to make an age assumption - as I r,d,h . OTOH, I was in university at 15, so.....But, I bow, courteously, to your youth ;^) And I do remember freshman year, in the spring, both HP & TI coming to campus with essentially trunk shows (the joys of being at a mainly engineering & science uni), and the excitement of so many. A girl on my hallway got a TI for about $150 (the HPs were closer to $300 IIRC) and would let me borrow it for chemistry! Our Tas actually made a rule that we could not use them in the weekly lab quiz - I guess they wanted to be sure we understood logs (acid-base thing). But, sophmore year we were allowed to have them for some things. As a scholarship kid, with no, I repeat, no extra money besides my job - I couldn't buy one in the spring. But finally did get one in the fall.

First - my hands are moving, doing something "useful". I'm in the fresh air and getting, what my grandmother would have called, properly tired.
And my brain is free to tackle problems and find possible resolutions, or to wander aimless.
And ripping out weeds is great for frustrations and aggravations. I stop being angry.
And the garden looks nicer when I'm done. And I'm a nicer Mom and wife....

DH was an engineering student, and bought the first-generation TI calculator for about $375, IIRC. Ouch! (I think that's as much as a good Guild 12-string guitar was at the time! His other avocation.) The calculator used reverse Polish notation - anyone remember that?

HPs used, and still do in the tech apps, RPN. But, I thought that all the Tis used standard. As I remember, I had a bunch of classmates that went for the TI because it used standard algebraic, though it didn't have as many functions as the HPs did. I had a lower TI, then a pretty high up there one, maybe a 75? - I don't know. Big diff then had to do with the trig functions, and the HP with the RPN could include more compounded terms - so to speak.

Yeah! I remember reverse polish. It took me ages to learn how to do it the 'normal' way afterwards. You begin to think in RP after a while (bet your DH did too?) LOL!
I bought my Eko Ranger IV 12-string in 1971 and it costed $101AUS. I've no idea what the exchange was back then, but probably something like double or triple. My guitar is *really* heavy because it has a removable neck with a great heavy block to support it. I can't play without a strap, 'cause I'd drop it. It still sings as sweetly as ever, though.
12-string gives a much fuller, bell-like sound, doesn't it? I fell in love the first time I heard one and have dearly loved my Percy (that's his name) ever since he came to live with me (I was fifteen and now I'm fifty-something). My other guitar is Benvenuto. He's a lovely classical guitar with a sweet, haunting voice and I love him too, but Percy was my first...

And Donna, too! We're hoping to do some yard planting/restructuring in Oct... So.....BTW - all but 1 daylily (11) are successfully sprouting in heigts from about 9" to 1" right now. One of them may not be happy - but we'll see -it'll be fine if it doesn't. Just let us know - I do have a plan for the house to be in shape by mid fall.....
Ah, on the hockey subject, one of our friends (30 ish guy) who works on the hill is moving to NH. DH reffed with him last night (he's originally from Mass) and couldn't remember the town that he's got a house contract in. But, serious hockey guy - will now be able to work ECAC, maybe some Big East. DH told him about our "hockey mom" friend, etc. So, who knows - you might be hearing from him - he's a fabulous guy -and his wife is expecting their first in Dec.
