Today's report

(Written at 9 AM, but I can't get online to send it! The static on the phone line is so dreadful I could barely hear Mom, so no wonder AOL can't "hear" through it to connect!)

We are having heavy rain with winds gusting up to 66 MPH. Part of the neighbor's tree is on my roof. For now, I still have electricity (knock wood).

For as long as the lights stay on, I will be stitching on Sesame Street. When they go out, I'll switch to knitting.

Up top of the Sierras, they have an avalanche warning.

They're telling us not to go out unless absolutely necessary. Fortunately, I work from home and I've stocked up on groceries, so it's not likely I'll come up with any sort of "absolutely necessary".

Bad weather here too. Gale F8 to severe gale F9 winds, rain and near-freezing temperatures - no snow though. All ferries & flights cancelled. And we've run out of heating oil. Fortunately we've got a couple of portable gas heaters and plenty of gas cylinders as well as electric fan heaters. Surrey, our cat, loves the gas heaters and luxuriates in front of them bathing in the radiant heat. Maureen is sat in her "pig pen", legs wrapped in a blanket, doing some blackwork and I'm doing a bit of website maintenance. Let's hope the power doesn't go down, it's not been too bad these last few months even in the really bad winds. Bruce

Here in NS, and also in the Winter Witches part of NB, we are having a day of respite, if you don't count the well below zero temperatures, but I can like that in comparison to snow lol

Y'all can come to ND. It's a beautiful, sunny day, minor winds and a very balmy 20 degrees, with a predicted high of 26! Much better than the -20 we had just before Christmas.

Other neighbor. ;)

Yes, I'm in charge of keeping Mom updated on what's happening in your area so she doesn't have to keep calling my aunt.

At this point, wherever you're going, you can't get there from here. Bridge is closed. Freeway is closed. Airport is closed. Even the trolley is shut down.

Sunny, warm California my foot!

That sounds so tempting that I'm sorry the airport is closed.

NOT!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking at heading south as soon as the airport opens.

Well, it's 59F here at present, yesterday was "very cold", only got up to the low forties!! Supposed to go back up into the seventies on Sunday, with a chance of showers. The guest room has twin beds in it, which dd taught me to scootch together tightly and make up with king sheets when we have a couple visiting. LMK.

Just e-mailed ds who works in downtown Sacto, and he is not leaving his office except to go home. He was going to take down the outdoor lights tomorrow, but says the wind may do it for him.

The best part of North Dakota sounds much like Saskatchewan! Lovely day here too, the squirrels are running around on the fence and all the frozen slush fell out of the wheel wells on my car.

Well, in that case, leave them as twin beds, since I'm leaving DBF behind. (Someone's got to feed the cats.)

We had approx. 60 cm of snow and we're not whining - it puts me in the mood to cook and while a gal cooks, she has to have a glass of wine, and hubby doesn't mind all this cooking for sure. Do you know it was minus 36C here this morning with the wind chill? And neither one of us whined about that either. If you're going to live in these parts, you have to put up with the weather. Now that terrible humidity we get in the summer, you can have - that puts me right in murder mode.

They're promising 8-10 feet at the summit by the time this series of storms is done. Would you whine with that much? ;)

The wind has stopped, and we're just having a last bit of light rain. Supposedly will get a break tonight and then more rain tomorrow and Sunday.

Meanwhile, at the summit, they're having white-out conditions and the freeway is closed over the top.

My power flickered quite a bit, but never actually went out. Whew! Spent the day working on Sesame Street and got Grover done.

I saw pics on the news of the storm, biggy like we often have on this coast, I see it stretched all the way up through BC as well though I think California took the biggest hit. Seems to be moving rather slowly and that is often when we get power cuts as lines can't take the continual hammering. Hope yours stayed on.

Lights are still on here, and although we're getting more rain the next few days, they tell us that the wind is over. Whew. Trees down all over town, taking out power lines with them. We got the worst of it, so PG&E is bringing up crews from places like Fresno that didn't take such a hit, and were hoping to have everyone's lights back on today.

Interstate 80 was closed over the summit last night, whiteout conditions, and closed this morning (I'm not sure if that's a "still" or an "again"). One poor woman, she'd been trying to get home for days and every time she got on the road, they closed the highway and she had to spend another night in another hotel.

Kirkwood ski resort is reporting as much as 5 feet of new snow, and expecting 1-2 feet more today.

City Arborist -- head honcho himself -- is coming over to look at the neighbor's tree. Over the last year or so, more than 1/3 of it has landed on my house in installments, so I want someone to decide if it's sick enough to be taken down on purpose before the whole thing lands in my living room.

I missed the weather report this morning so I do hope all is well today and the worst is over.

Stay dry.

Is this the neighbor with the cat?

No, other side. This is the one who mortgaged herself to the eyeballs to buy the house and therefore anything that must be done, gets done on the cheap because she can't afford to do it right. When the City required her to fix the sidewalk, it was much cheaper to chop out the tree roots and pour the concrete flat in place than to pour slabs on the flat and then bridge over the roots.

As soon as my handyman (who just happened to be here that day) saw that they were cutting the roots, he warned me to never sit in the living room during storms, because that's where the tree is going to land when it blows over. And, sure enough, the side with the cut roots is the side that's been incrementally landing on my house.

The back bedroom is not only safer, but warmer, than the living room, so I don't mind huddling back here during cold wet weather.

OK, you winter-whiners. :)

Kirkwood ski resort is reporting 11 feet (nearly 3.5 meters) of new snow in the past 3 days. And more to come.

Shovel that!

I flew back to CA yesterday. It was 60 degrees in KY at 5pm........it was 70 degrees in Chicago at 7pm......and it was windy and chilly in Sacramento at 10pm!! Had some nasty flying at times...was really turbulent over Tahoe. Was glad to get back on the ground.

The drive over to the bay was rainy, cold, and nasty!!
