Vintage Cross Stitch Dresses

Does anyone remember cross stitch done on gingham checked shirtwaist dresses in the 1960's?? It was mandatory to have one (if you lived in Texas). I remember working the cross stitch on the back, and the skirt (which had about four yards of material in it). The pattern was a large star or snowflake. My aunt taught me how to do it. I was in high school at the time and so proud of that dress. I know most of you are much too young to even know what I'm talking about, but I've been stitching a long time. Just a memory! Michelle

My Aunt in Canada taught me to stitch gingham tablecloths about 20 years ago. Is it using the main colour of the fabric and white to stitch on the squares ? ie..... red thread on white squares, and white on red ? She called it 'Chicken Scratch'. I worked most of it in the airport and on the flight home !

That was common here in NS, but usually picnic/kitchen tablecloths and napkins, it is/was called Hen Scratching. I still think it looks very nice and fresh on a picnic table.

I had several aprons in "hen scratch", no dresses though. I still like the way a shirtwaist looks (especially on me). Very nearly timeless. C
