Who we are and what we do.

Jeanine R aged 39 (last friday!), divorced mother of one DD aged 14 come September. Member at large of ANG, EGA and the EAC as well as my local un-affiliated Guild for which I am the Newsletter Editor. I've taken one EAC correspondence course on Metal Thread Embroidery. Started with crewel at age 8, moved on to Needlepoint by age 12, counted cross-stitch at 16. Five years ago or so I started dabbling in other techniques and have slowly tried many types of needlework. I am a history hound and am attracted to any and all types of whitework like a moth to the flame. For the past four years I have been obsessed with learning about the many different Italian needlework techniques and have been slowly harvesting information both technical and historical. I live in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada which is a suburb of Vancouver. I apprenticed as a typesetter and moved into graphic design but now I work for Starbucks. Been mostly a lurker here for a couple of years. I find it a very valuable place for information.

I am not kidding!! It is wonderful to have friends like all you cyber-buddies. Some I have met, some I have talked to, and the rest are always there for you!! Of the kids and stepkids, nothing, other than a very nice e-card from my new Japanese daughter-to-be, and email from son.

Life is great!!

I really like that idea because 70 sounds old so I'll be 68 three weeks ahead of you next year.

Gwen, age 43 (44 in July), Texas. I'm single, no children. I have three cats, two dogs (standard poodles), and a litter of six-week-old standard poodle puppies. I don't count them as part of the family as they will all be leaving me soon for their new homes and lives with their new owners.

I'm a cross-stitcher. Spent years stitching on aida, but about two years ago discovered the joys of linens and evenweaves and overdyed flosses. I recently learned to crochet, and I'm working on a very simple afghan for my mother who had to be placed in a nursing home last month.

I support my pets, my stitching habit, and my reading addiction by teaching English in a community college.

Not really, just awkward construction. But there is definitely a spelling error in the parenthetical aside.

Darla, 52, native Californian, living in California (Anaheim). Unmarried, child-free by choice, and currently pet-free (not a choice there). Found RCTN about the time I came online, about 1997 (that's the earliest I can find when I Google). Started handcrafts as a child, including the surface-embroidery fad of the '60s. Cross-stitcher, rubber stamper, reader, gardener. Truck driver/dispatcher by profession. And the much-dreaded Grammar and Spelling Police (congratulations to all the young people in the just-finished national spelling bee!). I tend to prefer the larger projects, such as TWs and the in-progress "St Petersburg" by Thea Gouverneur. Darla Sacred cows make great hamburgers. Picture Trail Gallery:

Currently working on "Marriage of Minds" (almost done! Hope to get it to the lucky couple before their first anniversary in August), some Christmas ornaments ("I Saw Three Ships," from JCS ornament 2004 issue), a Hardanger piece from New Stitches, and six versions of a "Chessie and Me" piece ("When This you See, Remember Me") for a group of friends. (And the "over 1's" are driving me batty!)

I've been on this board since '96 or so, and enjoy all of you. Love the many tangents and discussions, just like an in-person Stitch 'n' Bitch.

Gill - I'm in for the party. I'll be 68 next January. You take your RV and I'll take mine and we'll meet in the middle since you are in Florida and I'm in California.

Betsy Leiper is a wonderful crewel teacher/designer who has, through the years, trained many teachers in what I refer to as the "Betsy Leiper school of Crewel". Her type of crewel is very fine and delicate even if the patterns are large. One can usually tell if a crewel embroiderer has been studying with Betsy or one of her teachers. Her designs can be either traditional or realistic (I prefer the latter). She traveled frequently to teach crewel for years when her husband worked in Pennsylvania. When Tony retired, they moved to Middle Sandwich, NH, where they own an old farm house and a few acres. There they began a B and B, Strathaven Inn, which has been in existance about 25 years. Since she has gotten a bit older Betsy only occasionally travels to teach, making an annual circuit through Massachusetts, New York, PA, and down to the Baltimore area.

Four to six times a year Betsy has "Crewel Camp". Women who have been taught by her or by Betsy-trained teachers come for a week of crewel embroidery. Betsy usually limits the number to 6 although she will occasionally take 8. Embroiderers come from all over the US and Canada to participate. Some have been doing this for 20+ years. We stay at the Inn, have breakfast, lunch, and dinner there, and stitch. Betsy advises us, adds to our designs or creates new designs for us, and generally mentors us. It is a delightful experience.

I went for the first time last fall and am looking forward to my 2nd visit in a few weeks. I'll be there from the 19th to the 25th of June, up to my elbows in linen and wool. 8^>

I have included the web address for Strathaven Inn. For anyone interested in crewel, this is the experience of a lifetime.
