Need a place in South Florida to pour, fire, etc.

Hello, all, I'm not a potter - rather a librarian doing a research question.

My patron has a mold that he has made himself for a ceramic mug. He lives in South Florida. He's looking for a place where he can pour the (whatever it's called) into the mold, fire it, glaze it, etc. As I said, I don't know anything about this! He's been told that he needs a "traditional" ceramics studio, not a "paint it yourself" place.

Where can he find such a place which can accomodate him at low cost? He doesn't want to make a million of these mugs, just a few (less than a dozen, maybe?) He remembers such places as being common 30-40 years ago, but has googled and yellow paged to no avail. The few leads he has found won't return his enquiries.

So, I send this out in the hopes of starting him on the trail to success!

Thanks!

Kathleen

a librarian?

it's called slip casting

yellow pages. ceramics. look for a place that sells ceramic supplies, not a painting ceramics place. either they can do it or know someone who can do it for you.

He should be able to find a local college (community college would be the best bet for low cost) or adult ed program that has a ceramics program (usually listed as crafts under student activities or the like) where he can join as a member or take a beginning potter's class. Florida should have plenty of these. They will instruct him on how to make the slip and what clay he can use (they will know what they are firing to and what clays they want in their studio). He can also look for a ceramics supply store that often has classes and will help direct him in the right direction (they know where they are shipping clay to and who might have the necessary kiln if they don't). Good luck (also if you post what area you are in there might be a potter here that can help). DK

Thanks for the answers - even the snotty ones (yikes!).

I'm pleased to report that a place has been found (a private studio) and the first mugs have been poured!

Congratulations! P.S. If you are not familiar with newsrooms many postings can be read as being snotty or rude when they really aren't meant to be. The mind just seems to blurt out uncensored thoughts (much musing occurs) when typing in a room where you tend to think everyone thinks as you do. This is really one of the most pleasant rooms you will come across (well I'm a tad biased...)
