A 'fabric' lady who deserves homage

My sister told me of an article in the newspaper that tells the story of a great lady. Toots, as she is affectionately known, has worked in 'my corner store' for as long as I can remember. She has followed my projects and has taken a certain amount of pride in being the recipient of several gifts over the years - the last one being a small bag that would hold her knitting wool so that she could knit while walking or multi-tasking at home! She has always been so grateful for any kind thoughts and has always had sage advice to offer.

One can only imagine the changes that she has seen in 'our' world of fabric and notions, etc. The store where she works stopped selling fabrics several years ago and became a poor equivalent of an import furniture depot with some leftover bolts and home dec fabrics - yet Toots has stayed. The last time that I was able to visit with her at the store, we enjoyed our usual lively conversation and she checked out some photos that I had to show her.

My reason for writing about Toots now: I would like to make her a 'proper' quilt and I am being shameless about begging for any sunflower fabric that anyone might be willing to contribute. I happen to know that sunflowers are her favourites - after reading her story, it is obvious that they match her personality and outlook. I don't have a particular pattern in mind but will probably do one of my usual scraphappies - definitely with lots of bright happy colours that she loves so much.

Please use my gmail.com address using jennellh@ if you are able to contribute - also feel free to sign and address your fabric so that she will see how famous she has become. Thank you in advance, jennellh.

I have some sunflower fabric that I would love to contribute to Toots' quilt. Will get it in the mail in the next few days! What a thoughtful thing to do. I know she will love the idea that you want to make her a quilt. Wouldn't it be nice if there were more people like Toots in this world!!

Thank you Pauline, I agree that Toots is one-of-a-kind. When the store was still sellling fabric, there was always a lineup at her table and customers (me, in particular) would wait if she was on break or otherwise occupied. jennellh

Now let's not get carried away here. Somebody has to stay in the Swamp and make sure none of those Louisiana folk come in here and sneak off some gators for supper. We can't even get a babysitter long enough to go to a goat-roping. Polly

Chiming in a bit late here, but I think I have a couple sunflower prints lying around. I'll check, and get back to you.
