Attn Bear Doctors

When a bear needs cosmetic surgery what do you use by preference? Red Bear, the Official Guardian of Dreams and Protector From Rogue Gorillas and Other Scary Things that Hide in Shadows at Night, is now very old and more patch than original fur. Over the years I have used, calico, felt, and cordouroy to fix him up. Emergancy repairs all, and since now the girls are older and Damien is still small, I have a moment in time when I might be able to give dear old Red Bear a spruce up. I am contemplating the choices and thinking it the better idea just to lay new fabric over the old and all the patches. Whatever I use it must be red and white.

Is the bear wear in one place or mostly all over? Would a snappy vest or pair of britches or cool hat do the deed? My bear repair experience has been mostly pulling the worn spots closed. Do remember what the bible and Dolly Parton say about putting new patches on old garments. You'd want to use something old and soft. What about a badge or tattoo? Bear's Guardian powers might be impaired if you change his looks very much. Proceed with caution - and love, of course. Polly

Sounds like duct tape isn't going to do the trick this time. Any chance of seeing a pic of what we're dealing with for a better idea?

Hmmmmm, I'd love to see a photo. But I'm thinking about felt. Not the cheap kind, real wool felt made from roving (red and white, of course) and then felted onto Bear's body as needed. I'm not certain it would work. You might have to attach the felt to new fabric (very soft stuff) and then stitch gently. A conundrum, but a good one.

If the wear is mostly on the body, perhaps Red Bear can be sewn into a red baby sleeper or child's footy pajamas. This time of year, the Santa Clause type jammies are fairly easy to find...

Howdy!

If bear doctors want to use duct tape, or very sticky honey, I'd let 'em. There's probably a protection society for bears who are doctors; Bear Doctors United or somethin' like that. I didn't realize bears were doing cosmetic surgery; is it covered by bear insurance? I'm more familiar w/ Bear Quilters; they're just more interesting.

Most of him is covered in patches. His fur got loved off and the fabric underneath just wore away. He is sturdy, but I was looking at him the other day and thinking that he deserved some cosmetic attention. For a carnival bear bought in a thrift shop he has had a long life. Gosh, we have had him for more than 25 years!

It is odd. DD2 was the child with the gorilla terrors, and now she is all about monkeys and apes. She even sent me a picture of her petting a sedated gorilla. She has a friend who is a veterinary assistant and the gorilla gal was in for some dental work. Red Bear does good work.
