Back -- whew!

I've been MIA for the past week (almost), and I've really missed having access to a computer, both for this group and for the video chats with my DT.

On Saturday, I read some email and then took a break for lunch. When I came back, my screen was black; but that's not usually a problem, since it's an energy-saving "thing". Except that this time, my computer wouldn't wake up, and it wouldn't restart, either. It was just -- dead. :(

After a call to Apple tech support (really nice people, as usual) and some basic troubleshooting, I was told to take my computer to the local Apple Store for service. Since I have Apple's terrific extended warranty (AppleCare), this is not a problem. I took it in on Sunday, was immediately diagnosed with a dead logic board ($$$$), and left my "baby" there.

Today I picked up my rejuvenated MacBook, together with an invoice that said that I'd have had to pay over $1000 (one *thousand*!) if I hadn't had that warranty -- but I didn't have to pay one single penny. Whew!

At any rate, I've had to mark over 800 messages as read; I just can't go through all of them, though I did search for (and find) the announcement for the directory.

Life is good. :)

Gotta love that Apple care. They installed a new hard drive in my laptop when the first one went south. I think it was $900+ if I remember right. I wouldn't be without it.

$900 to install a harddrive??? i installed my own for the cost of the drive. its not rocket science. tho probably i'd have more trouble with a laptop. in my tower tis easy peasy to install a new one or two. one day i'l have to figure out all the other things i can install. so far have only done ram sticks, hard drive and a modem over the years. i'd think sound/video cards wouldnt be too hard to do either. i thot a whole new computer in the usa was less than 1know. shrug, j.

From the price, it sounds like something else was wrong, too. That was close to the total for a new logic board and hard drive for my iMac. Bad capacitors toasted the logic board, which toasted the hard drive, thankfully all covered under warranty.

It all depends, of course, on *when* that hard drive had to be replaced, how large it is and how fast it spins. Prices have come down dramatically lately, but they were quite high for a while there. I did replace the hard drive in my Mac laptop recently, and it wasn't hard at all, but I waited until the prices came down before I could afford it.

No I didn't pay anything for the new hard drive. They ate the cost which they said was $900. That is what the Apple care pays for, bumper to bumper coverage for a couple of years. I have it on everything Apple that I own. 2 ipods, and other Apple stuff. It is well worth it as tech support alone is $50 per call. No charge for as much and as many times you call to get help. They are very nice on phone folks and If anybody has an Apple product, it is well worth it to get. A number of years ago, they replaced the entire display system and all the guts on an E-mac that we had. No charge. gotta love it. John John

Anything mechanical breaks down. Apples do it less frequently. And there is that famous imperviousness to maleware. Priceless. ;>) John

Howdy!

We Apple lovers don't say they don't break down ; we say that Apples don't break down all the time ala microsoft, and Apples don't get all the other crap ala m/s. When they do break down, they're "more fixable", unlike.. .. well, you know. ;-D
