backing question

Okay, so it was put upon me that our church needed to make signature quilts for a very dear family that will be moving at the end of the school year. This family has touched so many lives within our church that I don't even know where to begin.

Here's the question...what would you do once you have the tops finished? LOL

For the parents, I *am* going to do batting and backing. They have 3 boys...one in 1st, 1 in 3rd, and 1 graduating from high school this year and moving to college next fall. I talked with a friend of mine, and we came to the conclusion that the parents should definitely have a "normal" quilt (her words, not mine). She agreed that maybe the oldest boy should have a fleece backing..a little extra warmth for the dorm room. Then we were talking about the younger boys - one is autistic - and were bouncing around ideas...she thought that just flannel would work..something light that they could have to snuggle with.

So, what do y'all think??

Bear in mind that I need all 4 done by the middle of May

Boy, are you ambitious! Why not just do a nice signature quilt for the parents and make fleece blankets or simple rag quilts for the boys? Or simple denim quilts with flannel backing? If you make denim quilts from old jeans, leave the pockets on some squares and write little messages to the boys to tuck in the pockets.

yes and no..using this as a basic teaching time for a friend that wants to learn how to sew...straight seams are the easiest to teach, so she is helping me assemble them. Had i thought about doing a denim at the beginning, I would have, however, i have blocks from all the adult SS classes as well as the classses that the boys are in, so......kind of have to use them since the entire church knows about the project

So, why not get groups of church ladies to help tie or quilt some of these quilts? Maybe assign one quilt per group. Let them know that you can not do all this work yourself and you would appreciate everyone who helps! The flannel back for the boys sounds nice and warm. Barbara in Central Florida

now that makes good sense indeed. the quilts are supposed to be 'from' the whole church. they all need to be more involved than just sign'n a piece of fabric. theres all of a minute of their time. geez. jeanne
