Bad kitchen Karma

Today my small group meets at my house. Yesterday I was going to make my "go to" coffee cake. DD is babysitting an 18 m/o and popped over to visit for the day. Somewhere along the way, I neglected to put in all the flour for my cake. A flop. I know it was because I lost count as we were watching and playing with the toddler. So this morning I made a new recipe for berry cheesecake muffins that sounded good. My cheese mixture that is supposed to glop into the centers was all runny and sat on top of the muffin batter. So when they rose, it ran all over my muffin tins. Another flop. I think I'm going to stay in the sewing room while my friends meet in the family room. I need a hideout! Do you think I could screw up the coffee??

I don't see why not; we both do it all the time. 8^P Baking disasters are why supermarkets have in-store bakeries... (That, and it's just too danged hard to make a decent eclair...)

From where I live, there wasn't time to get dressed and hit a bakery before the girls arrived. The muffins tasted fine, even though they weren't anything like the original recipe. There was no cheesecake/berry centers in them. OH well....

Phooey!

Traditional eclairs are naught but long cream puffs, and grocery store eclairs are just raised doughnuts with delusions of grandeur.

I like to fill mine with chiboust creme which is a little fancy, but regular pastry cream or cream custard work just fine. After that is is down to choclate glaze, and if you can't do that, chocolate confectioners iceing, or buttercream, or heck just melt a chocolate bar and you are good to go.

Though the way Kathyl's luck has been running a box of Timbits might be the more practical solution. (G)

Oh yikes! I hate it when that happens.

Reminds me of yesterday. I'd forgotten to buy a card for an upcoming event for a family member. Wasn't going to be back at the store and didn't want to make a special trip for a card, so decided to acquaint myself with my new card-making program. That actually went well enough...until I ran out of some colors of ink printing the darn thing. Hmmphh!

I bet your friends won't mind just having coffee anymore than my family will mind my rather overly blue card.

fwiw....

OAT FUDGE SLICE preheat oven to 180C or 360F grease 8" round pan. this recipe can be increased accordingly with no problems. just gotta work out how long to bake it if you increase.

Into one bowl...

1 Cup Rolled Oats 1-1/2 cups boiling water let this stand to absorb the water. then add 1/3 cup of Butter or Margarine let this melt into the hot oats. then beat in... 2 Eggs 1 tsp Vanilla

In another bowl (while the above is going on).....

1 cup Flour 1 cup Sugar 1 tsp Baking Soda 1/4 cup of Cocoa Powder mix well.

Add wet to dry ingredients, mix really well, This will be a rather gloopy mixture, not to worry, it tastes reallllllllly good. Pour into a greased 8"round cake pan. Bake for 35 mins at 180C or 360F (fan forced ovens will take less time, dont ask me how much less, i dont own one). Let it cool completely, then ice/frost with....

Chocolate Icing/Frosting

3/4 cup Icing (powdered, confectioners) Sugar 1 TBL Butter or Margarine 1 TBL Cocoa Powder add Hot Water (only a wee amount) to make a nice spreading consistency. enjoy!!!!!

I sometimes put chopped nuts or half walnuts on top too, if i have any. This should be quite moist when eaten. nice with whipped cream, yogurt, ice cream, creme fraiche et al on top or nothing at all. we've even eaten it without any icing on it. no one ever complained.

no hiding out. i'd love to have someone come round but thats not happening as all my friends have gone to live outside the country now. your friends come to see and be with you. eating something scrummy is a bonus but not the purpose of the day. give them a howdy from from all of us downunder. enjoy your time together. j.

another idea is occasionally have everyone make their best or favourite treat and bring along. might be wise to make those treats in wee bite sizes so you get to taste all of them. tho you might not get much actual sewing done on the day. oh well. share out any leftovers to take home. might not be much leftover tho. oh well again. j.

We meet every week. And since there are only 7-9 of us on any given week....everyone gets plenty of turns to make goodies. And I'm not the first one to have a failure....they make for good conversation.! And although they might not look like the magazine or cookbook cover, it's rare they aren't edible. My muffins were very edible....my cake would rate a C- or a D+.

Well... that kinda depends on the grocery store (which is why I said, "supermarket") doesn't it? :-) If we were talking typical chains, I'd agree 100%, but anyone here from western/central NY who's familiar with the term, "Weggie's" knows what I'm talking about; their bakery eclairs are about as real as they get... 8^P (Mmmmm...!)

Somebody smack this lady back to reality, please - we're talking CHOCOLATE here!

I have not yet bought sweeties from the Wegman's bakery. Mostly because I fear that they will be really good. Really good and really easy sweeties are not on my want list! I do like their bread though.

Are you suggesting that eclairs topped with real chocolate would be a _bad_ thing?

Smart move & good guess. (I'm talking about the eclairs here.) We get them once a year for our anniversary breakfast, and might get them again for a similarly very special occasion. If they weren't so fattening, I'd be eating them all the time...

No, I'm saying that melting a chocolate bar - even a good one - on top of a real eclair instead of the icing that should be there just doesn't cut it.

In the UK eclairs are usually topped with real chocolate, but occasionally they come with a sort of chocolatey icing/glaze instead.

I like the Chamber's Dictionary definition of an eclair: n. a cake long in shape and short in duration.

It has to be good chocolate, too. None of yer cheap Cadbury's rubbish. Proper Belgian stuff is what you need.

That chocolate icing is a sad disappointment...
