Baseball Swap Signups (ON Topic)

I was going to do this next week, but it seems a few of you are as anxious for the season to begin as I am. :)

It's time again for the baseball swap! If you aren't familiar with it, here's the swap in a nutshell. You pick a team (or teams) to back, and based on how well that team does you trade 6.5" squares of quilt fabric. If your team wins a game, you get a square from everyone who backs the team you played. If your team loses, you owe each of them a square. Simple!

You don't have to like baseball or follow the games to join in. (But fair warning -- you might start liking baseball if you do join! *grin*) At the All Star Break in July and at the end of the season in October, you'll get an e-mail containing printable labels telling you how many squares you owe and who you owe them to. This is a centralized swap, so you'll mail all your squares to one person who will sort all the fabric baggies and mail yours back to you. If you're outside the US, no problem. We have a system of Swap Buddies who can deal with the postage issues.

How many squares will you owe? That depends a lot on how well your team does and how many people back the teams yours lost to. I usually owe around 100 squares for each of my teams in each half; YMMV. That's a total of about 3 yards of fabric.

How do you sign up? Send an email to the swap address at baseballswap AT excite DOT com (sorry, the spammers have found the addy so I need to munge it), or send one directly to me. (Again, de-spam the addy!). In that e-mail, include your name, your e-mail address, your snail mail address, your phone number, and what team(s) you're backing. If you want to back more than one team, they need to be in different leagues -- any of the swappers will be glad to help you figure that out if you aren't sure. When the season starts, we'll send out a directory of all the other swappers (and ONLY to swappers), so also say if you want to be EXCLUDED from the directory. (But if you aren't in the directory, the Mad Swapper and her minions will have a much harder time sending you random squishies and thunkies!)

If you join the swap, I also recommend you join the Yahoo Group at

. Lots of chatter, both on and off topic, lots of friendly ribbing about losses and crowing about wins, and a great place to learn about baseball. It's not required to join the Yahoo Group, but you'll miss out on half the fun if you don't. Sign up before March 31, because April 1 we PLAY BALL!

Well, thank you, Kathy, for the explanation. I wasn't particularly alarmed about it but never knew why some of us were swapping baseballs. Polly

Nah, we're more like Pete Rose: gambling on baseball. ;-)

It is great to mention this swap in conversation, such as when the guys talk too much about sports. "I'm in an online group that bets fabric on baseball games."

Nann whose BBS Squares box is overflowing, despite the mixed fortunes of her chosen teams (the mantra: there is always next year)
