Batting weirdness....

My mom made a quilt about a year ago which she uses on her bed. After a couple of washings, the batting has started coming through the top and back in little balls--kind of like the type an old sweater gets that needs to be shaved. The batting was a polyester blend. Neither one of us has ever run into this before, although we've used a poly-blend in all of our quilts and none of them have ever done this. Anyone else have this happen? Since we're about to sandwich a new quilt, we're kind of leery about what kind of batting to use. Thanks!

Are you sure it's the batting? What other fabrics were in the wash with it? I once made the mistake of washing a sheet with towels and it made the same sort of balls. The sheet had been washed many times before without problems so I couldn't understand what had gone wrong at first, then I realized it had never been washed with anything other than sheets until that last washing. I haven't washed anything smooth like sheets with anything fuzzy like towels or socks since then. Debra in VA See my quilts at

This is called bearding, and poly batts are notorious for it. Usually bonding on the surface of the batt will prevent it -maybe your mom used an unbonded or poorly bonded batt? It's also worse when the fabric is polyester or a blend -something in that combination makes the batting fibers especially prone to migrate.

I like Hobbs Heirloom in any of its forms -never had a bearding problem. Roberta in D

Hi Debra,

I wish it were what she washed it with, but the quilt is bedspread size and goes in the machine by itself. Thanks for the thought!

Thanks Roberta! Since we've never paid attention to whether the batt was bonded, (hadn't known there was such a difference) I would be willing to bet that is the problem. We must have just been lucky in our other quilts. Thanks for the recommendation for Hobbs Heirloom too.
