Your mother will be in my prayers as will you for having to make such a tough decision about getting her another car. I will say that if your mother is still a good driver enjoys getting out and going it would probably be well worth getting her another car. I don't like it when I am stuck at home without a car, although I rarely go any place, and I am sure at her age it would be losing some independence if she didn't have one.

Prayers on the way for making such decisions. I am glad that she wasn't hurt and I know that paper work is the pits.

My goodness, yes, Susan. Get that sweet mama a car - and find one that is as similar to what she's used to as you can. I only drive close to home in daylight - but when my car is out for service, I really feel trapped. We would imagine her driving is better than someone who's on a cell phone, eating a drippy taco and applying mascara. As to the paperwork (grrrr!), keep copies of everything and keep them a long, long time. DD had a car door blow shut on her wrist many years ago. The car was parked and we were having a violent windstorm. The insurance companies fought for years as to who was at fault and who had to pay the bills. We simply sent them copies of the accident report and let them debate eternally without any distress on our part. Polly

You may want to consider an electric mobility scooter for your mother as an alternative to a car. My father-in-law bought one after he was forced to give up driving a car. He lived in a small town and was able to get all over town with it. It worked out well for him.

Thanks. I will keep you in mind. Right now I think everything is OK. There are several people from her church that will take her to appointments if my sister can't. I did find time to visit both quilt stores while Mom was at the hairdresser. Sorry I didn't call you. I will let you know if I am coming for another extended stay.

Thank you for all of your prayers and nice comments. I just talked with Mom and she is feeling better. She didn't go to church today so they called to check-up on her. Now they know so will be there to help. My sister didn't want the church people to know right away because she was afraid they would not let Mom rest enough. Hopefully they will organize themselves and not all rush over at once.

Seems like you had your hands full while you were in the neighborhood. I'm glad you were able to sneak out to the shops while Mom was getting her hair done.

This might be just the little push she needs to make the decision to move, Susan. I'm glad she's ok, but it is really tough when she can't drive. I hope it works out for all of you. KJ

It took my mom a long time to make the decision to move into a senior apartment, but once she did, she never regretted it. She had never driven and my dad had given up driving, so they were dependent on others for rides to church and shopping and just about anywhere they wanted to go, as well as for help with the yard and maintenance on the house. The apartment was across the street from the church (and the funeral home :))and only a couple blocks from the bank, so they could walk. With no worries about home maintenance and less worry about transportation, they actually gained some independence with the move.
