childrens sewing

My DS announced this week that he wanted to learn to sew. At the moment we are making a pencil roll out of felt and when he has finished that we are going to make a notebook cover. I only hand sew, and I'm running out of ideas as to what we can make. Does anyone have any ideas or websites with ideas? BTW he is only 5 so nothing too fancy please!

Draught-stoppers! Essentially just a long rectangle, with sides sewn and then turned inside out. Fill with stuffing and some plastic pellets (or whatever you want for a bit of weight to it). Then you can sew on eyes and a mouth for a snake. Very fun and easy.

How about a drawstring bag? Our little guys loved to have a secure place to store special collections; money, marbles, rocks, shells . . . they don't work well with frogs and bugs. To function properly, you must remember that you need an opening on both the left and right for the drawstrings. I'll be glad to explain how that works 'off group' if you've never made one. The Tooth Fairy will be needing a little pillow with a pocket soon. Cuddle your 5 year-old for us. They are so very special. Polly

I love the mittens and bag idea. Plus: Does he have a little table that he could make a mat for? or his own small chair which might be able to accommodate a cushion? How lovely to be working with a 5-year-old. . In message , Sarah Dixon writes

How about a pillow... like maybe a football, baseball or soccerball? Just having him stuffing it with fiberfill will be a fun activity! It's amazing how much you can "stuff" in there!

My son still has his football pillow he made in 6th grade! (he is now 25!)

My son was 6 and wanted to make his own quilt. I convinced him to start with a pillow first. He picked out some fabrics and I cut some squares for him and drew the lines. It is a double 4 patch. He got the front done, and decided the back had to be done in pieces too. He is now 7 and hasn't finished it yet. He still pulls it out every once in awhile to work on. He has about 2 seams left to sew for the back and then we can sew them together and stuff. Wish I could have convinced him to do something even easier/faster, but he is getting there.

My DGD(soon to be5) has added another dimension to her "quilting " like grammy work. She takes fabric squares that are plain and colours them with fabric markers. Right now she is into drawing oak trees with haycorns beside a house with some stick figures. After she draws on the fabric we select some other fabrics that match (well that she likes) and she sews (yes she is sewing on her own machine set up beside mine) them together. Apparently we are making a quilt for one of her stuffed animals cause they need to be warm. The seams are wonky and the colours are wild but the creativity unleashed is fascinating to watchI think I am learning a lot from this experience. Just have fun with him and enjoy the fun of creating with your son. Donna inNWONtario

And this has a big list of stuff, but if you read through there are a few projects in there that you can hand sew with your DS!
