I was thinking of trying the bow tie block for a baby quilt I want to do. But quilterscache rates it at 3 pins, very difficult; I'm at more like a 1.5-pin status right now.
Is it really that bad?

The way they do it is more complicated than it needs to be... if you are willing to have smaller pieces in your block. If you are using a small scale tone-on-tone type fabric
-- you'll hardly notice the difference.
The alternative way to make it is to make it doing a grid -- 4 x 4 inside blocks. Then do 4 half-square triangles to make the center cross section.

the mini bow tie is only one pin. that other one has set in corners, way more complicated than need be imo, agreeing with Kate, lol. just need to adjust the sizes of the units for the mini so its whatever size you fancy. if you're unsure, ask us, someone here will have an answer. :)

i also liked the baby bunting block/quilt on Q'Cache. that 1.5 you think you are will soon be a 2, then a 3, then a 4 and quicker than you realize you'll know theres nothing you cant do quiltwise with enough time to think it thru. heck you got us here for whatever you need to know. i reckon most everyone here has asked for help of some kind from us at one time or another. sometimes thats quilty help sometimes other help. we live to please. :)) cheers from winter in the south pacific, jeanne

the 12 inch regular bowtie would be huge on a baby quilt. just checked the last page with the full quilt on it.
4 bowties in a 12" block is much better i reckon and no set in corners. you could use the leftover tris in the border maybe too...hmmm, or maybe they're a wee bit too small? how cute it is made of scraps. great use of all our scraps and babys love lots of colours. jeanne

This one is 3-D and really fun! We did this one in my BOM in my guild. It was lots of fun, and very easy.

We did a bowtieswap on the Pat Sloan Yahoo Group. I got some wonderful ones duringthe swap. We did them out of 30's fabrics, and I've been collecting30's fabric ever since. It seems that one thing leads to another. . . . .

I was just going to say the same thing - I love making the 3D bow ties - they're fast and easy!

I'm about 2/3 finished with a quilt top requiring 1260 2.5" bowties. Piecing by hand, because it's less fiddly than the machine in this case. (Makes a good take-along project too.) My very 1st bowtie looked terrible. The 2nd was OK. The 3rd was good! Now I can even do them without glasses :-) So no, it isn't that bad! The original bow tie block has some set-in parts, but it isn't hard if you pin carefully. The easier method is at this link
