Does it get better than this?

Tomorrow I begin my first day on my job which I am very much looking forward to, they sent me a wonderful gift basket full of items Made In Idaho to welcome me aboard, I run down on my bike to the LQS to get more interfacing and there are TWO shopping carts full of nice cotton fabrics at $1.00/yard! I came back home, got another twenty bucks and got all the fabric that would buy and then later, DH comes home from the store with my favorite chocolate truffles! Woot! I am one happy camper tonight!

What a great day! I hope tomorrow at the new job is just as nice.

My eyes are still bugged out from reading $1 a yard fabrics! The store near me that just went out of business only marked down 25 percent off. Not such a deal when I get that when I teach. Oh well.

I'm envious too! Just checked out one of the LQS's and the sale fabric was $9 per metre!

That is why I do almost all my shopping while in the US during the winter!

Even with the conversion from US-AUS dollars that's still very high at US 1.00=AUS 1.34 Maybe I need to convert meters to yards? (I can't remember how to do that though.)

3.3 meters = 1 yard? 1/3 yard? Either way, owie! Why is fabric so high there?

Sounds like the perfect day. I hope you enjoy your new job. What field are you in?

A metre = 39inches or thereabouts, so a metre is only a fraction more than a yard.

I've just checked the Quilt shops I use, and the average price is £9.00 a metre (fractionally under $17) but noticed that anything marked 'New' is priced at £9.50 a metre which is almost $18.

It can't be the cost of importing that makes the price so high - Makower is manufactured here, and I found it at £9.99 per metre (so about $19.00).

Oh well.....!

fabric/notions/quilting-books outside the usa has to consider the exchange rate(current is one US$1=NZ$1.50ish) on the goods/shipping/import-duty/merchant-profit-margin/etc. add all that up and in nz the current cost of the best fabrics at LQS here is around $30 a metre(sale might be down around $20). books usually around $50ish each here. notions would be double probably. i dont look anymore but make do with what i've got now.

i buy good fabs when i'm in usa. i can still get the less than terrific ones here at our equivalent of joanns at around $6 a metre on sale. some of its not too bad but i still prefer the usa fabrics. the rest of the world pays for oil worked on the cost in US$ per barrel. i guess we do for everything else too, who knows but its damn expensive. i guess i'm lucky i've been back to usa about every 5 yrs. always return with fabric, lol. who needs lots of clothes, lol. cheers, jeanne

I'm one of those pointy headed people in a financial institute now. I called it quits on the technical field and it didn't hurt a bit! In fact, I'm going to get so busy here in a few hours I probably won't be able to visit with you all for a bit but I'll at least try and drop in to read and see all the lively discussions! I want very much to see how Tony's quilt turns out after it's cleaned, too!

I do most of my fabric shopping in the US.Even with P &p it still works out a lot cheaper, sometimes less than 1/2 price if I purchase sale fabric! I never buy too much so have not had to pay import duty so far!In fact I ordered 4 yards Thursday before last and it arrived Monday morning! The 4 yards cost just under £12 inclusive!
