Domestic sewing machine

Hello. I have been lurking for a while. Hope you intelligent and helpful people will be able to give me some info about an old sewing machine I bought at a yard sale. It is a Domestic portable, all metal, only straight stitch. The bobbin and shuttle are identical to my 20-year old Kenmore's! I tried a web search, but could not find out much about the machine, except that it may have been made by the White company for Sears. Is this true?

I don't know who made the Domestic machine, but I had one for a long time and never had any trouble with it, other than I had to replace the foot pedal. My parents bought it for me when I was in high school, I guess around

1965. I used it until I got a new machine in the late eighties. I got a lot of use out of that machine, made literally hundreds of items with it. There were several years when I was a stay at home mom that I used it almost every day. I always put it away on Christmas eve, and it never failed someone would get a gift that needed to be hemmed, so I would be sewing on Christmas too. Thanks for bringing back some good memories. I think you have a good solid machine there, if it's anything like mine. Linda Ohio

Yes, please! I am uncomfortably slow and dense, too. Sorry that I took so long to reply, but can only log on when I visit my DD. I can read the group at home, but my old machine doesn't support enough Java to let me log on.

I am enjoying the Domestic for piecing, and I can now leave my other one set up for FMQ, which I am trying to learn.

This newsgroup has inspired me to try the FMQ. And to get into some challenging wall hangings. Last week I tried paper piecing, and now have a small wh waiting until I feel that my fmq is good enough to finish it.

Hello, I tried to reply to your post the other day, but didn't see it so will try again. I had a Domestic machine for a long time. My parents bought it for me when I was in high school in the mid-sixties. I made lots and lots of items with it and never had any trouble with it, other than the foot pedal finally wore out and had to be replaced. I was told it was made by the same company that made White machines, so when it was twenty years old I replaced it with a White machine, mostly to get some stretch stitches. If yours is anything like mine, you have a good, solid machine. Enjoy! Linda Midwest Ohio >
