down under is BIG -

and that's not a spam phrase!!! LOL -- I've been scoping out where I want to go this winter. How do you ever get to see each other?? Already I'm seeing a second trip on the horizon. Sorry Sharon -- I'm looking at only NSW and NZ for this one.

Will there be any "don't miss, on pain of having LN steal all my quilts" quilt shows in Nov and Dec??

She does live nearby, you know. I erased all the incriminating pix of her from my digital so I have no blackmail protection from her any more.

Hi

What sort of things are you hoping to see during your time here, apart from LQS of course :-)

Actually -- I do all sorts of things -- building things -- so I love architecture. I wanted to climb the Iron Bridge in the UK, but was afraid of getting caught. Climbed both towers of Segrada Famillia cathedral in Spain by Gaudi -- my fav architect.

Also into gardens, paintings, and scenic places and history. Most of all, I'm into PEOPLE. That's a big reason I stay in youth hostels -- I meet fabulous people of all ages from everywhere.

I can honestly say that the friendliest people I have ever met were quilters. There's something wonderful about creative people who can love and praise others' work. -- no other group does this -- no matter what nationality or background. -- I know there is always a friend when I meet another quilter. -- and I love the warm hugs.

Waaaaaaaaaaaah - 's not fair!!! We are only a measly overnight train trip, one hour plane ride, 10 hour drive from NSW! Sheesh - what's a girl to do?

Ok -- so who is on the east and who is west -- -- I have already figured out which way is north -- aren't I brilliantly smart???

I do have a month to poke around and then off to NZ. This cute guy from Dublin came in where I work last week and told me to miss Ayers Rock if I had to ration time. He was a packer on a round the world ticket. Said Grand Canyon was time better spent.

Do you have flight passes like the rail passes?? OTOH - a night train is a good sleep

I just peeked into your pictures Diana -- the nine patch in jewel tones is awesome -- and I like the name of the siggy quilt -- sleeping with my friends -- that sounds so cozy and huggy

please email me privately Diana -- I think I was out of the loop when LN put the directory together this year

Thank you Mim! The nine patch finally made it to its new owner and has been declared to be great and comfy, and the siggy quilt.. well... you cant see from that little picture but its not finished, but I still use it! Its official name is really Bankie.. its the one that feels like a security blanket. Anyone who cares to send a signed 3.5" square of material can be added to it. (Im in the directory) Hows that for a not so subtle beg? :-) Diana

I'm definitely west. If you're not getting as far "west" as Sharon, I don't think you'll be dropping in at my place! :-(

A friend of mine just recently climbed Ayres Rock (also known as Uluru) recently and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He's seen the Grand Canyon too, and didn't make any disparaging comparisons.

Wherever you get to down here, you'll have a wonderful time.

I'm now starting to look at bus and car discounts. IYHA has wonderful discounts for lots of things. And I'm poring over books and web sites. There are 40 YH's in NSW alone!! I doubt that I will stay in a castle like I did in Scotland.

I can't wait to meet everyone!!!

I am SOOOO excited about this, Mim! You GOTTA report! Can I get in your suitcase? And so (once again), I'm woefully behind, and Ragmop sent your post about TDB (which I didn't get, here, tonight, sigh), and I'm THRILLED, when do you leave, and when you get to Kiwiland, look up one of the Baseball Swappers, and a couple of other folks live in OZ, too (met them here, but they don't come here any more), and you MUST meet-up with Giraffe, and all the rest, and OZ is REEEEELY big (but lordy, what a rollicking FINE bunch of sheilas live there), and can you tell I'm excited?

And so, I'd be DEEEEEEE-lighted if TDB were to update his passport and accompany you to OZ. I'll just have to FIND him (I THINK I know, but they do escape and go walkabout, sometimes, when I'm not lookin' ... including my OTHER kids ...)

I'm EXCITED!!!!!!

I leave first week in Nov and come back in Jan. I'm doing the Sydney and south trek this time -- at least as far as the Melbourne area --

Then to North and South Islands NZ. -- Hi Viv -- I'm doing mostly public transport. I'm comparing rates and routes for bus lines mentioned in the IYHA books -- I like to watch the scenery not the road -- and backpacking. I do send things home as my pack gets too stuffed -- this time I think I'll stash the overflow with a cousin as I pass thru Sydney. I'll come back loaded with extras. I also start with FQ's, etc.

TDB will be a welcome travel partner. Can't you just see me telling stories in a hostel?? I do have fun!!!!!

hey Mim, did you check out kiwiquilters on yahoo groups. might find a few keen quilters around nz with a guest room and time to show you some of the country. of course they'll also have that ever needed net access as well. tis a good thing i'm not the only one here in auckland as my 'guest room' is still in 'how to fix the rising damp' mode. :(

curious why you picked nov to jan to come? i'd of suggested feb thru april, after school goes back (less locals on holiday) and the weather is lovely then too. the quilting guild meetings are back in full swing then too for visiting. the auckland p&q often has a book or something else as a gift for overseas visitors :). xmas downunder in summer is still odd to me after 26yrs. on the beach with a barbie and beer, hmmmmm. i'm thinking TDB will sure get a workout though at any time, lol. ahhhh, to be young and fit enough still to do the backpacking again. enjoy!! jeanne*
