Festival of Quilts UK - RCTQ meet

Hullo All I guess I'm the first to have regained consciousness after our exhausting day yesterday (well I do live the nearest!) What a fantastic show! It was the first, for a new company to the Quilt Show circuit, and was backed by the national Quilters Guild. So, I suppose it had a lot going for it. But Wow! Definitely a two-day visit in future. I realise now that I missed so much. So any Brits reading, do set aside the equivalent days next year, if you can't manage it between now and Sunday this year. It will be worth it.

Roberta flew in from Germany! Helen (of Armadillo and trombone fame), Suzie (from under the pier), Moira (plus Hilary her friend) and I all gathered at the main entrance. It was so good to put faces to names. Hugs (physical not quilt!) were exchanged and Suzie had brought the UK Banner for us to sign - which we did at photo time after lunch. My first banner signing - an emotional moment >g< Roberta had brought us some squishies from Ragmop (thanks Sandy), and some delicious cakes from Germany). Although we had to rush to get in some more drooling (at quilts) hours, we had a grand time.

I am still a bit dazed to be able to describe the show. I'll have a go when I've come back down to earth a bit!!

Gosh they were scrummy quilts - wish I could go back and look at them all again! (And the 600 or so that I didn't get time to see...)

I hope you all noted on Suzie's ng post about the show that she has a link to pictures of the RCTQ get together- our ladies are all lovely! And she included pictures of Pat on the hill's gorgeous eagle quilt! I, personally, have awarded it a blue ribbon even if the judges were too silly to recognize it's obvious excellence of quality in color, craftsmanship, execution, and design. Suzie's link also has a few dozen pictures of the "other" quilts that were entered......

Thanks so much Leslie I must point out, though, that mine was in just a small section - with a specified theme. It wasn't in the main part of the show. The theme of that section was 'Free Spirit'. You all know I rarely use red, well my blushes are making a good attempt at scarlet!!! . In article , The HairyFacedOnes 'N Me writes

Well, give me a break! Only got home Sunday night, and too tired to post right away. My brain is still spinning with sensory overload. Or maybe it was the cider. Staying with Helen was wonderful -somebody there to talk quilts with for every waking hour! We spent 2 days at the show (Thurs and Sun.), and it was hard to tear myself away to catch my plane on Sunday. The organizers did a good job. Lots of space, good lighting, and vendors arranged along the back half of every aisle, so we could take commercial breaks whenever necessary :-) My only complaint was the "catalogue" -quilts had numbers on their labels, with the numbers listed in order in the book, where one could look up the relevant info. But it would have been nice to have the maker's name and all info right next to the quilt. And the catalogue diagram didn't indicate where the number series were located.

On the Friday, Helen drove me to Wales to see the studio of Jen Jones

a HUGE collection of Welsh quilts, both wholecloth and pieced. Jen took us to her storeroom, the upstairs of an ancient cottage absolutely crammed with quilts, and left us to rootle and fondle all we wanted. Quilter's heaven! It was the perfect thing to do after spending Thursday at the show, where there's a "Don't Touch" sign everywhere you look.

Saturday we went (with Helen's DH too) to a nearby town full of antique shops (in both senses of the word), where there was also by chance a French street market, then on to an old cider mill for lunch. More antiques in the afternoon (feeling somewhat wobbly). then we relaxed in Helen's garden and looked at the sheep in the pasture next door and talked about quilts some more.

This is getting long -it would take a book to describe everything sufficiently. I'd do it all over again with great pleasure! Ragmop, your signature squares were much appreciated (but it would have been more fun to see you there, along with as many of the rest of you as possible). Roberta in D, still mind-boggled

Howdy! Lovely to see you all, as well as the quilts. Roberta, you look a lot like you did in Ft.Worth! Cool and smiling, with some tea sitting close at hand. Thanks, Suz, for the pictures, all of them, you lovely young sweetie, you! Ragmop/Sandy--hoping I've bribed Roberta enough to not show the pic from F.W.

Well, I got pics, lots of them! I had a fantastic day, it was so lovely to see Roberta and Helen again after so long. It was great meeting Pat, and yes, I did photograph her quilt, I have not got a website, so let me know if you want a copy!

Howdy! I was thinking of loading up the Cruiser and heading over to your brother's place, dropping off a load of stuff. Now, that's not a bribe but a threat. Ready to think again?

That's the trouble w/ these RCTQ meets, spreading knowledge! ;-D

Ragmop/Sandy--it's always good to know a few skeletons in the closet

Actually I don't know what this technique is called, but the basic premis is that you get a bunch of squares and stitch 'em together into a block, pressing the seams every which way but loose, then put the back of the quilt on display rather than the front...

I think it looks exceedingly tacky and leaves me feeling rather unnerved - does it mean that the seams on the front are so bad that the maker decided to show off the back instead? loose threads and all?

Can anyone enlighten me on this please?

Hmm, have to see about that...

...as long as it doesn't involve driving around the Brussells ring-road again...

How much are cheap flights and where is your nearest airport?
