First time grandmother

I normally lurk and read all the wonderful things this group shares. I have experienced very pleasant fabric swaps, was able to complete my appliqué chicken thanks to a member, and corresponded with a few of you. I am coming out of lurkdom for a brief bit of news. I am pleased to announce that my daughter, Rachael, will be a mother in April. She had a terrible case of endocarditis early this year and we nearly lost her. She and Rob announced last night that much to their surprise, they were pregnant. So I pass along my joy to you.

Not everything in life is well timed, but with my DFIL ill with cancer and the terrible health problems my DD had early this year, we are delighted to have something to celebrate. And as a very beginning quilter, I have baby quilts to make!! I also wanted to make appliqué cloth baby books. Does anyone know how well these would hold up (see, it WAS on topic).

Paulette, what wonderful news! Congratulations to all! It's been a long time since I had babies in the house and my children have seen fit to present me with nothing but "grand-critters" instead of grand-babies (DS getting married in November so we still have hope!) so I don't know how these books would hold up. I would suspect they will get chewed on, sucked on, dragged around, pulled at, etc. So, perhaps these would be a better gift for when the baby is a bit older. I would think bright colors and tactile fabrics would be fun. I think there are others on the ng that could give you better advice on this topic.

ps - all notices of grandbabies are "on topic" since we assume there is a baby quilt planned.

Enjoy! Don't forget, we expect pictures of baby and quilt at the appropriate time!

Congratulations, Paulette! (I'm jealous :-) IMO the cloth books are better for about age 2. Spray with scotchgard so they wipe off easily, and don't make them to be heirlooms. Mine were always "practice" books: things to button, snap, zip, tie, velcro-backed shapes to match, buttons to count, etc. But you can go ahead and start making one now -they aren't any quicker than a small quilt! Enjoy being a grandmother! We get such wonderful perks! A cloth book will hold up pretty well. I had one as a child. I loved playing with it. It had zipper, shoe lace, pocket and a button to button. Great fun! Diana

Paulette-

Congrats on this most wonderful news! Granddarlings are the bestest! My third will be arriving some time in the next three weeks and I'm so excited as she will be within an hours travel while the other two are

2,000 miles away. Yay!

Regarding the cloth books- each of my granddarlings get one. Mine are about color and subject.... a beautiful goldfish with long flowing tail on a background of hand-dyed watery blue with seaweed and snails and bubbles, etc. Each page is a different rather intricate machine applique'. The children use them with their parent's supervision- look at the pretty colors, which color is that, what animal is this, what does this animal say, etc. and they are to be saved for the child to have to share with their own children. My DDIL wants it this way and this is fine with me. I also make a memory quilt for each granddarling from their used baby clothing which includes size tags and labels and little pockets and sleeves and bits of lace and appliques from the clothing. They have their draggin' around quilts for every day loving, so they are not "granny quilt" deprived at all. I think the idea of a quilted activity book or even an activity-type "regular" quilt is an excellent idea! Whatever you decide to do it will be loved and cherished- no doubt about that!

Happy granny-ing!

You are about to enter a wonderful world... grandma and grandpa I thought my world was complete, then came grandkids. They are so much more fun.

I saw a little T-Shirt that said it all. "Who needs Santa, I have a Grandma"

Have fun, they are only little for a while. And you get to babyproof your home, again. :-)
