FM ideas

I've been following the thread about what machines to use for Free Motion. Now I have a question. I have made a quilt with maple leaf blocks. It is queen size. I do have a Baby Lock Quest with the larger harp, so I'm willing to give quilting a try. So far I've stitched in the ditch around each block to stabilize the whole quilt. Now I have to decide what else to do. I made a sample runner with the same blocks. You can see how I stitched "veins" in the leaves, and stippled the light colored areas. This was just one idea I had. What do you think? Any other ideas? Should I use the varigated thread that I used in the sample? Would a plain color be better? I've been working on this project forever.....if only I could decide what to do now! I'd love to finish it.

Wonderful, wonderful. Your quilt is wonderful. The block arrangement is wonderful. Your plan is wonderful. Makes me smile. What was the question? Polly

Thanks, Polly. I look at it every day, but just can't get started. I'm so undecided.

Your quilt is gorgeous; your sample is just totally wonderfully appropriate and perfect. GO. Polly

I would stick with the variegated thread and the veining since you are depicting nature - the leaf blocks don't have to be exactly the same which will make it easier for you to follow your own path. Have you considered a loose meandering line for the background which might simulate wind movement? An all-over stippled background might give you too stiff a finished quilt? jennellh

What Polly said. The veins and the stippling look fantastic.

I love what you did on your sample. I couldn't quite see the variegations in the thread, but I use variegated thread a lot for multi-coloured things. It's going to be gorgeous. Lovely pattern - great border! . In message , Alice in PA writes

Wow! What a gorgeous quilt! The quilting on the runner is stunning, and would work very well in the quilt too, imo. In fact, I'd like to make an advance beg! :-)

Love the border! Pretty quilt too! Looks great as a runner. I like what you did with the leaves. Check the back and see if you want more definition of the leaf shape -maybe outline each leaf, including the stem. If you do that, you might not need the background stippling, which may be too much quilting for a bed quilt. Runners are a little different, as they need to lie flat.

Gorgeous, beautiful, yummy and I think you are right on target with your idea about "drawing" veins and defining the leaf. Wonderful quilt!

As long as I've worked on this quilt, I don't think it's going anywhere! All the blocks were received from members of my Interquilt group....an internet group of quilters all over the country and in Canada....so they're special.

The thread is shades of gold, orange, and brown, so I think it ties in pretty well. Thanks for your comments!

You know, I had thought of outlining the leaves too. But I can't imagine man-handling a quilt that large through so many turns and corners (in each leaf). Do you think outlining could be done Free Motion? Heck, now I'm getting all confused again! But I do understand that you're saying the stippling might make the quilt a little stiff. Maybe a looser, larger stipple?

Thanks for your comments, jennell. I understand what you're saying about stippling being too stiff....would you do the meandering over the sashing too? Or, just the backgrounds of the blocks?

Okay, Alice, none of that. What you did on the table runner test is Just Right. You can easily outline the leaves free motion. Keep doing it. Close meander stippling does make a quilt just a little little bit stiffer and you might not want to do that for a premature baby or someone with both arms in a cast but usually it doesn't matter. As to meandering in the sashing - usually I just sneak/wander over to the next block and leave the sashing unquilted. It gives the effect of a picture frame around each block and, IMHO, is great! If, after laundering and blocking, you don't like the picture frame look, you really could go back and stipple them down. I don't think you will - but you could. Now. Will you get going or do I have to come fix lunch and wind bobbins for you? Polly
