Kali4Star looks to me to be easiest to put together!

Everything is relative of course!! Perhaps I could try that one too?

This is a melon with a strip pieced rectangle on the sides. Not too bad other than matching the seams at the angles... and some partial seams.

First of all I saw it as a star with kite shapes in between each pair of points and diamonds at the sides! Then I could see a snowballed square with pieced rectangles set along the sides sewn with a partial seam. I can't see a melon at all >g< . In message , Leslie& The Furbabies in MO. writes

I think I'll have a go at piecing a couple of them; but then I think I might set about a project of several of them - done with English Paper Piecing. I know there's no challenge then; but I have some lovely ombre fabric that would look gorgeous with these. Would that be OK with you Jack? I wouldn't be making them into a book!!!! Tomorrow I will make a point of checking out Kali tiling.

Of course, go for it. Each one only took me a couple of minutes of mousing. Our version of the Kali2Squares.gif pattern should be done shortly and I'll post a photo (it's pieced, not bordered yet). I deliberately designed it to make the underlying structure almost impossible to work out at first sight. There obviously *is* a structure, but somebody used to normal block settings wouldn't immediately see the trick.

BTW, I got the idea for that quilt from a book - Grunbaum and Shepherd, "Tilings and Patterns". All kinds of wonderful stuff in it, and you don't need to read mathematics to see a lot of what's going on. Probably very expensive now (it wasn't exactly cheap when I bought it) - buying an old Mac just to run Kali would almost certainly be cheaper.

LOL, I'm with you Patti. Can't see a melon at all (but then, to me, melons are curved, not straight lines.) This one really doesn't seem to be all that difficult to piece, just time consuming, depending on the size you make.

The hex example also looks very do-able.

Friendship Ring is very similar to Jack's Chain. The major difference is substituting nine-patch blocks for squares of fabric. This would be an interesting pattern to vary with different small blocks in the squares. hmmmmmmmmmm... wonder if there is a way to show some "transparency" here?? Something to play with.

Just did a fast google search on "Kali tiling" and got a site with a downloadable program for them. Available for both Mac and Windows. And in several languages. Neat, and I see some more time sink here.
