Good Day for Sewing

The state of Michigan has been dropped into the freezer! I woke up to -8 degrees temperature (-22 wind-chill). All the schools are closed. DS#3 is back in bed. Dear QI Samson has been outside long enough to "do his thing". So I'm going back to bed for a bit -- then wake up and quickly get my chores out of the way so I can spend the day sewing! The heat in the room with the lights going, the iron going, the machine going will be quite nice.

Anyone else freezing out there... grab a cup of cocoa and warm quilt. At least we don't have snow and/or ice. Just the cold.

After 10 years in Minnesota (and dozens of mornings in the below 0 temps) -- this is my son's first ever "no school due to cold" day. We never lost a single day in Minnesota due to snow either. Guess these Michiganders are just wimps! LOL (Right now -- DS#3 is happy to be wimping it out under his two quilts!)

Stay warm!

My thermometer is reading 4 - that's cold enough for me thank you very much. My computer room is the coldest in the house, I don't think I'll be spending to much time in here today.

Just got a severe weather alert - according to AccuWeather, we have high winds which, when you take the base temperature and factor in the wind chill factor, will drop us to -5 degrees. And here I am with a son that needs to be severely reminded to put on his hat and gloves...as in "do it, or get grounded". He just doesn't understand the health consequences....DD on the other hand LOVES to wear her hat and gloves....gloves are pink and sparkly and hat is flowered...lol.

Larisa, who still has the coat from NY, which is "good" to -25 degrees :-)

Not quite as cold here, but as cold as it gets for this part of Illinois. I wish I could spend the day sewing, but alas, must bundle up for work. It's not even having to go outside that bothers me, but that the heat gets turned down so low at work over the weekend and the building is a draft old, converted factory building, that it will not warm up at all in there today. So I'll be freezing all day at work.

It's -20 degrees here in Western Wisconsin and our schools are closed too! We do have snow days occasionally, but not this year. I don't recall school being closed due to temperature either, but it must have happened some time. I think they worry about kids waiting for buses and walking to school.

Kate, Weren't your kids in school in MN back in Feb. of '96 when the governor closed all the schools because the temps were in the -30 to -40 range? My brother, sister, and I were in the process of cleaning out my parents' house. They had moved into an apartment about a month earlier and had their house for sale; they got a cash offer and the buyer wanted possession in a week. Of course, that was the coldest week of the winter. I'll never forget that week.

We have about -20 this morning with no wind now, but a wind chill advisory. Quite a few schools are closed. It's -24 in Ely and -30 in International Falls.

We moved to Minnesota in July 1996 -- to June 2004. All that time never a snow day -- well, except once. Superintendent was out of town. On Thursday afternoon it stated snowing. Not deep snow but winding and bad driving conditions. We had a horrible accident taking the lives of 3 high school students. (Word was they were driving WAY WAY WAY too fast for the driving conditions on the freeway - 494) The next day -- -- only 4 inches on the ground -- but driving conditions not great -- Ass't Superintendent cancelled schools. That was THE only day we missed during the entire 8 years.

We were at around -9 this am. and are at about -2F currently (actuall - don't know what wind chill is). Not quite as cold as Betty or Julia, but still cold. My new house is acutally an old house that needs lots of help in the insulating department. DH and I are going to work on some of that over the next year. I also can't wait for the fence and a doggie door we are planing for this spring/summer. All last week I was thinking how nice it would be if my little guy could go out without me when he needs. At least like yours, he's gotten faster with the recent cold.

Good weather for hand quilting or finishing up a binding!!!

I can't believe MI is as much of a Wussie as is OH! They closed schools here today also because of the cold. If they think it's cold, they could go to ND--was supposed to be -28 today (that's actual, not wind chill). Bet they had school. I'm very happy today-it's finally winter weather. I truly would rather have this than those 90+ days with humidity to match,. At lease when it's cold, the sun is usually shining. Still haven't had to zip up my jacket this winter. Gen

You sound like me Gen! Though I did zip my jacket today when I went out at -4. Still no hat though....I hate hats! I like the cold ....in season. I like the thought of some of the bug population being eradicated. But even then, last night there was still a live Asian beetle (look like lady bugs) in my bathroom! I think those are indestructible! I do find my typing fingers getting a little numb here in the basement when it's this cold. It's silly to heat three stories for just little 'ole me at home during the day. KJ

I'm in MI too, however, where we are it's for the blowing and drifting snow, not the cold - although last I looked it was 6, with a windchill of -16. Guess it just depends on the district and the Superintendent.

Here in SE KY we had about 5 degrees F and it was cold wind chill in the minus but I don't know what, we also had snow and school. We did not have school on Friday because of the temps, but not near as cold Friday as was this morning. Wonder if that no school on Friday had anything to do with the boys playing in the state tournament. Sure sounds like it to me.
