Happy Dancing .... on the horizon

for my Kimonos & Kanji quilt. I just got it back from my long arm quilter (she is still in Minnesota -- I'm in Michigan). I will continue to send quilts to her because her work is so extra-ordinary! I'm sure you'll agree. (you'll see it in my webshots folders -- right at the top!)

While the pictures give you a hint of the wonderful quilting on the quilt - you really need to see it to appreciate it.

The binding is yet to do (I really don't mind doing bindings) -- but for now the quilt is hanging in my LQS -- as advertising for the kimono & kanji quilt class. The class will just do the center portion (a wall hanging --

2 - 1 - 2 of kimono's and I will share with them patterns for the 4 kanji words of their choice). The binding will be the dark red of the inner border. I think I might have liked it better had I done that border in black -- as the red doesn't fit well with the majority of the kimono's -- but it's not too bad.

The outer border was made of 4" drunkards path blocks -- on point -- was a VERY challenging border. I had to work backwards to get the measurement of that border (and it was ALL BIAS edges... UGH) to decide the size of the finished inner portion of the quilt. Math usually isn't a problem - -but this one had my brain cells really doing overtime!

Anyhow -- hope to be binding it pretty soon. Then I will be busy dancing... dancing... dancing.

That is a beautiful quilt Kate! What a challenging design. And that quilting -- very detailed indeed, not many longarm quilters have that expertise.

It has the wow! factor for sure

It's gorgeous, Kate. I take your point of the difficulty in fitting in those Drunkard's Paths. It was worth the extra trouble, though. As you say, the quilting is wonderful and so fitting. Lovely combination. . In message , Kate G. writes

Gosh, Kate, that's gorgeous! I love your kimonos, and the quilting is just exquisite. I like the red with it, too -- it may not "go" with some of the kimonos, but it adds depth to the quilt. It's a wonderful quilt! :)

Kate, that is a real beauty! I see why you continue to patronize that longarm quilter, she does wonderful work and it compliments your quilt top so well. I hope I can be half that good when I get going with my longarm! Your border is masterful, I like it very much.

Congrats on a beautiful quilt!

The border was me playing around. Wanted to do something "Asian " inspired --so thought fans... so I started doodling. Came up with using drunkards path blocks -- alternated and on point. That's all it is -- 4" drunkard's path blocks. Made "strips" of 4 squares -- a solid - a DP block - a DP block - a solid. then sewed the strips to create "the look" I wanted. Does this make sense?

If not -- let me know and I'll draw up something in Word and send it.

PS -- Thanks for the kind words.

That is such a kind offer, and I really am a visual sort of gal. Sometimes I can make sense of written instructions, but not very often. If you don't mind, a drawing would be great!! I really love how it looks.

Go back to the Webshots album -- I've added a picture and a brief explanation of the border. See if it makes sense. I used 4" blocks (4

1/2" unfinished). Once you start working with it -- the corners are actually very easy -- they actually end up "mitered" to keep the pattern design fluid.
