In a timely news broadcast - New Zealand students will be given latitude to use text message spelling in their final year exams. The examples shown included - "2b or not 2b that is the ?"

I am stunned!!!!!!!!!!!!

I defy anyone to justify this as "advancing a living language".

And just to add insult to this "progressive move", the handwritten sample shown was barely legible!

Enough is enough. There is no possible justification for such an erosion of standards in basic education.

...but I think this is someone, who's native language isn't English, though I'm quite sure this person doesn't quilt. So I don't understand the fuss about this post. I often have to struggle with every sentence I write here because I'm not sure I do express my opinion or feelings well. So this kind of critic makes me feel uncomfortable too. And after all this is an international group :-)

Please don't feel uncomfortable. We have a lot of people on here that have English as a second language, and I can recall some posts recently that I could not read because they were in Italian(?). This is an international group even if most posts are in English.

I suspect the original criticism may have been defensive as we have been subject to some nasty spam and trolls this year, and posts like this can often be a way for them to get attention.

If the original poster is genuinely interested in quilting I hope they will post again. Many of us would be happy to persevere with broken English to offer help and advice.

Well, I guess this is almost as good as when we gave ENGLISH Language Arts tests in Spanish for a few years.

supposed (adjective) generally accepted as being so; believed (his supposed brother; generally supposed to be wealthy).

Supposedly: (adverb) according to supposition

In this instance, 'supposedly' would be the correct usage.

In another newsgroup I frequented, people were always flaming about spelling or grammar. I hated it, because invariably it turned out to be a poster for whom English was their second language. I have the utmost respect for anyone who is bilingual enough to post in another language, however bad their grammar or spelling may be. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to learn a new language, especially as an adult. I can't speak a word of any foreign language, and I think that's true of many folks my age who were educated in the 50's-60's. Sherry
