Ideas wanted for puppy quilt

I have uploaded photos of Piper, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel who has come to live with friends of the family. I'm looking for ideas for 'the' coverlet for him bearing in mind that he does love to chew. I hope to see him in person one day next week, weather permitting - since he lives out in the country with the Navan church quilt folks! I'm told that he enjoys being a lap pup and watching hockey games - don't tell Winston that hockey games are shown on tv - yucky- hockey!! A photo of his sister, Roxie is also uploaded in the Winston&Friends album. The puppy shower hasn't been scheduled yet but already his new Mom has said that he should have a Royal Stewart tartan coverlet. The real mccoy tartan, I cannot afford......jennellh

Keep in mind that darling Piper only sees in shades of gray so are you making this for him or "Mom"? LOL I have found over years of having pups around that are shamelessly grateful for any gifts and never complain about fit or color. Puppies rock!

Do you do appliqué? Things that puppies love to chew would be precious - our Yorkie had a special taste for Southern Living Cookbooks, all 20 volumes. As he grew, he preferred the wooden 'shift' on the recliner and the cables to the computer. Never bothered with shoes and bones but that might be cute on Piper's baby quilt. Polly

I can't say anything about the pup chewing. That's their job. However as far as a coverlet goes, a few years ago I made one for a "Westie" using paper pieced dog houses in blocks. It came out really cute.

I've just had a look on Google - Images, Jen, for pictures of Royal Stewart tartan. It would be perfectly possible to use one of its slightly simpler forms and to replicate the tartan using coloured squares and rectangles!

There you go - a challenge for you! Would be fun to see her face if you did that (and little Piper wouldn't mind anyway - aren't they gorgeous). . In message , jennellh writes

I'm sort of confused here. You are going to make a quilt for a puppy that will chew it? He is a really cute puppy but I would have a problem making a disposable quilt.

Howdy!

In between gales of laughter and side-splitting guffaws (a "shower" for a puppy?) and snide snickers (Royal Stewart tartan coverlet), I'm wondering what's funnier, the idea of *making* a R.S. tartan coverlet for a chewing puppy (don't they all?) or the people who are sponsoring this nonsense. ;-D

We bought a big bed pad for Stanley puppy/dog; it was guaranteed to be "almost chew-proof", could stand up to the use of "almost any dog"; after an hour as Stan's bed we put the pad back in the box and returned it for a full refund. Puppies have sharp teeth. I went to Hancock's store & bought a large piece of tough, canvas-like material, and a large piece of heavy denim. Bought a cheap doggie pad from the pet store, covered it in the denim (layer 1) and all of that in the canvas-like material (layer 2), sewed the end shut, tucked that inside itself, sewed that shut by hand (heavy thread), and let him at it. Stan chewed on the corners, never made it thru' layer 2, couldn't get at the pad. In a few months he had grown out of the "chew everything" stage & was into dog "chews" and toys. The pad is still in good condition, gets washed a few times a year, shows little wear. Stan doesn't seem to care that it's not a Royal tartan of any kind (he's an English Springer Spaniel; maybe they don't keep track of such things), and is, apparently, happy w/ his cammo-colored dog pad. In the house he sleeps on his old quilt, a picnic quilt that was dug out of the tent supplies when he came here to live; it's (mostly) green; he likes it, we think.

R/Sandy -- ... hoping Stan doesn't hear about the "puppy shower", we wouldn't want to hurt his tender feelings, being that's he's a dog & all... *snork*

What do you call a really ugly quilt?

A dog bed.

Happy quilting,

CKC spaniels are *so* cute! Pat's idea of making the quilt "be" the tartan is a great one. About seven years ago, I made a "plaid" quilt for one of my DGSs, using this idea: . It's not difficult! :)

A few years ago, I made fleece scarfs using a red plaid - I think that somewhere around here, there is still some leftover. Piper only weighs in at 4-1/2lbs right now so he won't need a big quilt. I remember seeing your quilt before and I agree that it is effective as a plaid and it will be quick to make. Thanks, Sandy, jennellh
